Inspection sheets usually have a diagram of the car's body. The inspector marks the location, type and severity of defect on the diagram.

The codes can vary from auction house to auction house but are typically something like:

A - Scratch mark
A1 - Scratch mark about a thumb's width
A2 - Scratch mark about a palm's width
A3 - Scratch mark larger than A2

B - Dent
B1 - Dent with scratch
B2 - Dent with scratch
B3 - Dent with scratch
BP - Area that was repaired

C - Corrosion
C1 - Light Corrosion
C2 - Medium Corrosion
C3 - Severe Corrosion

E - Dimple
E1 - Slightly visible dimple
E2 - Few slightly visible dimples
E3 - Group of slightly visible dimples

H - Faded paint

M - Repaired mark

P - Paint defect
P1 - Minor paintwork defect
P2 - Medium paintwork defect
P3 - Major paintwork defect

R - Rust exists

S1 - Rust about a thumb's width
S2 - Rust about a palm's width
S3 - Rust more than a palm's width

U - Dent
U1 - Dent about a thumb's width
U2 - Dent about a palm's width
U3 - Dent larger than U2

W - Repaired panel wave
W1 - Repaired panel with slight wave
W2 - Repaired panel with medium wave
W3 - Repaired panel with large wave

X - Panel needs replacing
XX or XXX - Panel has been replaced

Y1 - Crack about a thumb's width
Y2 - Crack about a palm's width
Y3 - Crack larger than Y2
