I am mortified by how many people want to turn our country into a monolithic society. A society so rigid in its makeup with no variety in its culture, where everyone has to be lock-stepped with each other, is not a nurturing society, nor a society that can survive. Survival is based on its ability for progress, and progress only works with ideas from diverse backgrounds.
Many of us have read Speculative Fiction and/or watched Science Fiction movies, that show how depressing and oppressive monolithic societies can be. The individual is pushed down into a tiny box, even tinier than the ones our current society attempts to push us into. Stories, such as Brave New World, 1984, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Stepford Wives, The Giver etc. explore the dangers of enforcing oppressive uniformity.
Right now, as I listen to a few military planes taking off from our local airport, I wonder what will be the breaking point for the people in our country. In Minneapolis, the breaking point has happened, but the rest of the country seems to still be in a wait-and-see mode. The vast majority seems to be hoping that it won’t happen to them, just like so many Germans did when the Nazis and their Brownshirts wreaked havoc in their country.
