I first came to the XYZone (former Yugoslavia) in January 1999, almost by chance from visiting Hungary. I went first to Zagreb and then on to Split (Croatia) where I had an unforgettable summer visiting most of the coastal towns and islands along the Adriatic Sea.
I also visited war-torn Sarajevo (Bosnia) on a humanitarian aid trip in the Fall of that same year that had a profound effect on me. I since have spent the better part of the last few years in Croatia volunteering with local NGO’s on a grass-root level projects to better the life of those in need and provide sustainable avenues to improve their lives themselves for the long term.
I feel being a volunteer has provided me a unique perspective into people’s lives and surroundings here that you can’t experience from any tourist trail or catalog and also provides me an avenue to give back of my time to the local communities I visit or needy situations wherever the need may arise.
The summer of 2006 I was able to take a short trip to Novi Sad (Serbia) and I am currently visiting Slovenia where I have had the time to get this blog up and running. I hope to eventually fill in at least a fraction of my many pre-bogging experiences over the past several years as well as I find the time.
It has been a dream of mine for years now to be able to share my thoughts, impressions and experiences of this beautiful area with others and with the event of the online blog I now am able to do so. My goal is to visit as much of this area as I can, especially Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo as well as parts of Slovenia and Croatia that I have not been to yet to get a fuller understanding of this region firsthand and share my experiences and findings in this ongoing blog for the benefit and enjoyment of others.
My deepest hope is that through this blog and my amateur photographs I can convey at least some of the warmness and friendship I have felt from the people of these lands and that it will inspire others to want to experience it also.

Hello Justin
I came across your website because my friend, Anton Marn (director of the Ad Pirum Institute) sent it to me regarding the construction of the bunkers. How funny that our paths should cross like this. I met Anton back in the summer of 2002. I was working on completing my Masters in Architecture and I had the opportunity to study in Slovenia (more specifically, Koper). I’m embarassed to say this but back then, I had hardly heard of this country! I had a chance to explore more of Slovenia and had the fortunate of meeting Anton and his friend, Andrej. I have such fond memories of that summer – meeting new people and seeing Ljubljana. I love the city (although I admit, if hard pressed, I would have to admit that Prague is my favorite) and it’s so nice to see someone who has a deep appreciation for the place/country/area. Anton and Andrej also took me to Croatia, to the island of Krk. I thought the water off the Isle of Capri in Italy was beautiful – the coast of Croatia blew me away. It’s my ambition to someday go to Dubrovnik and the Dalmation coast.
I haven’t had a chance to read all of your blogs but it seems that you are having a great time discovering, observing, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Cool Blog!
Looking forward to reading about Bosnia!
Tremendous blog, people of this area are really unique, in both good and the bad way. Thanks for sharing these thoughts.
Hi Justin,
I came across your site today because I was looking at what people were searching to find my own page. It’s so nice that you feel this affinitely to the former-yugo countries. I myself was born in America but my father was Serbian and my mother’s family is Croatian. My mother was born in the US as well. Her parents moved before Yugoslavia and my father moved in 1973 while it was still Yugoslavia. I still have lots of family over there on my dad’s side, mostly in Bosnia and some live in Croatia and I just love being there. I wish I could travel more often than I do. It’s great you’ve seen so much of the countries. I look forward to subscribing to your blog and hearing about your adventures over there.
