Xavier Carreras
My research is in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. I am interested in machine learning methods for natural language, with applications to entity and relation extraction, syntactic-semantic analysis, as well as machine translation.
In 2005 I completed my PhD at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) under the supervision of Lluís Màrquez. From 2006 to 2009 I was a postdoc at MIT/CSAIL with Michael Collins. From 2009 to 2014 I was a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the TALP Research Centre of UPC. From 2014 to 2017 I was a senior researcher at Xerox Research Centre Europe (which became Naver Labs Europe in mid 2017). During 2020-2022 I was research scientist the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC).
I am a research scientist at dMetrics since 2018.

Current Activities
- I'm part of the research team of the ERC-funded INTERACT project, led by Ariadna Quattoni at UPC Barcelona.
- I am PC member of: EMNLP 2022 (senior area chair for Syntax and Parsing) and COLING 2022 (senior area chair for Machine Learning for CL/NLP).
- I will participate in the panel of The 12th Lisbon Machine Learning School (LxMLS 2022).
Activity Highlights
- I was PC member of: EMNLP 2020 (area chair for Semantics), COLING 2020, EACL 2021 (area chair for Machine Learning)
- I am action editor of Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics (TACL) since August 2017 for two two-year terms.
- I gave a lecture at the 10th Lisbon Machine Learning School (LXMLS 2020) on Learning Structured Predictors. The full 2020 lecture is here.
- I was program co-chair of EMNLP 2016 with Kevin Duh. Take a look at our opening slides and the video-recordings of all EMNLP 2016 talks.
- From 2011 to 2016 I was officer of SIGNLL, the ACL group that organizes CoNLL.
- I gave a tutorial at EMNLP 2014 with Borja Balle and Ariadna Quattoni on Spectral Learning Techniques for Weighted Automata, Transducers and Grammars, check the tutorial slides and videos (part 1 and part 2).
