Starbucks Delocator Will Be #1 Hit on Google for Starbucks

Here's some nice resistance to the general climate of fear surrounding anything that invokes a corporate brand-name: Carrie McLaren is running a campaign to get people to link to the Starbucks Delocator by its proper name, instead of "The Delocator" which was the name forced upon it by a legal department afraid of getting sued. Here's the story in two short parts: part 1 and part 2 (find local cafes with a zipcode). Now that you're up to speed, let's see how high up in google we can get the Starbucks Delocator when people search for "Starbucks. via Downhill Battle

Democracy Arsenal: 10 Reasons to Oppose Bolton

Meet the new blog in town, Democracy Arsenal, written by former Democratic staffers & administration members who tend to be hawkish on national defense. In the above post, Suzanne Nossel presents 10 reasons why John Bolton should absolutely not be appointed U.N. Ambassador. The Gadflyer says it's a must-read, and they have a link to a great WaMo article, "War Torn", from Nov. '02 on why the Dems can't seem to capitalize on their national security successes.

"The Hammer" Melts in Hot Hot Water

More on DeLay's precipitously falling approval ratings in the Chron of Higher Ed: "There seems to be no question that there has been an erosion in support for the congressman," said John Zogby, whose polling company, Zogby International, performed the survey. "He is posting numbers that one would have to consider in the dangerous territory for an incumbent. And he isn't just an incumbent, he is a longtime incumbent."

Why Dem. Administrations Put More Money in Your Pocket

Michael Kinsley, op-ed editor for the LAT, scores some real estate in the WaPo for a meditation on why Democratic administrations put more money in your pocket than Republicans: Under Republican presidents since 1960, the federal deficit has averaged $131 billion a year. Under Democrats, that figure is $30 billion. In an average Republican year, the deficit has grown by $36 billion. In the average Democratic year it has shrunk by $25 billion. The national debt has gone up more than $200 billion a year under Republican presidents and less than $100 billion a year under Democrats.

Goldman Sachs: Beware of Oil "Super Spike"

BBC reports: Crude oil prices hit record levels on Friday, with leading investment bank Goldman Sachs warning the cost of a barrel could eventually top $100. Goldman Sachs said that the oil market may be in the early stages of a "super spike", which could push prices as high as $105 a barrel. It said strong global demand, allied to potential instability in oil producing countries, could inflate prices. (Via TomPaine.)

Gore to Launch "Current" -- Open-Source Journalism

Monday's edition of The Note excerpts a WSJ article on Mr. Gore's new venture, the news site Current: "In an interview Friday, Mr. Gore said the goal of Current is to connect 'the Internet generation with television in a brand new way.' Its Web site will be a key part of its service, listing topics on which it wants material, such as reviews of movies, CDs or videogames; items on social trends; and advocacy journalism. Current will pay $250 for videos it airs." More via Taegan on Current's key demographic.

USN≀'s Washington Whispers: We've got more names to add to the growing list of 2008 presidential hopefuls. On the Democratic side, pen in Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin. Allies say his trip south last week was the first of many to red states where he hopes to push his progressive agenda. On the GOP side, add rookie South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who took down former Democratic leader Tom Daschle . Senior Republicans say he's being groomed for a veep or even presidential run. Include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty . Insiders love his record of balancing the budget, boosting education, and protecting the environment. Finally: ousted Environmental Protection Agency chief Christie Whitman , the former moderate New Jersey guv.

Statistical Analysis of Kerry's Performance Nationwide vs. Bush

Chris from MyDD crunches the data so you don't have to: Kerry strength was undeniably in the swing states where he spent the most campaign resources. Relative to Gore's vote margin, Kerry's four best states (OR, WA, OH and CO) were all swing states, as were seven of his top nine (add ME, MN and NH), nine of his top thirteen (add WI and NV), and eleven of his top nineteen (add NM and IA)... Overall, Kerry increased 21.4% from Gore's 2000 total in these twenty states, while Bush increased 23.8% from his own total. Basically, Kerry did just as well as Gore in the swing states.

DeLay in Hot Water in his Home District

Holy Cow! TPM has the poll numbers showing that the Hammer is in trouble in his home district. According to a poll in the HouChron: "half of the respondents gave DeLay a somewhat or very favorable rating. Yet 49 percent said they would vote for someone other than DeLay if a congressional election in the 22nd District were at hand; 39 percent said they would stick with him. As always, dKos is on the story as well, running some unbelievable anti-DeLay editorials from TX newspapers.

MSNBC: "A Democrat Dark Horse Poised to Emerge"

MSNBC reports: Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, a blunt Midwestern maverick who isn't afraid to defy his party, is perfectly placed to make the kind of impression that gets a run for the presidential nomination off to a quick start. Feingold, a potential 2008 Democratic hopeful, has what his more famous colleague from New York, Sen. Hillary Clinton, lacks: a starring role on a Senate committee that will repeatedly make big news over the next six months.

Summary of Bolton Nomination

Dave Meyer joins the crew over at Tapped, and he's got the beat of covering the bonkers nomination of John Bolton for U.N. Ambassador. His first post is a good summary of where things stand, which is, as he freely admits, extremely indebted to Steve Clemons of the Washington Note. From all appearances, Mr. Meyer is guest-blogging away from his own site, FUGOP.

Party-Line Vote Expected on Bolton as of now...

Steve Clemons of the Washington Note has the latest likely score of the votes on the nomination of the bat-isht-insane John Bolton for U.N. Ambassador. It looks like it will be a party-line vote, currently 10-8 in favor of the GOP, though Clemons takes heart in the fact that Sen. Chafee of RI might defect to improve his re-election prospects, and that Sen. Hagel of NE seems to be a reasonable guy. Clemons writes, "We have a week to go before the hearings -- and Senator Hagel and Senator Chafee need to hear from those of you who care. Just ask them to read this material -- to look not only at Bolton's comments on the United Nations, but his entire record."
