Boundary Change Process
As Richland School District’s community continues to grow, the district periodically reviews school attendance area boundaries to limit overcrowding and create school communities for newly built facilities. Below are frequently asked questions regarding the boundary change process.

Who makes the decision about the boundary changes?
What factors are considered during a boundary realignment?
While each boundary realignment process is different, there are some common priorities such as:
- Limiting the need for walking students to cross major traffic corridors or other barriers
- Preserving “neighborhood schools” to the greatest extent possible
- Balanced socioeconomic demographics within schools
- Minimizing travel time for students being bused

The district is not able to evenly split the district’s schools among its secondary schools due to differences in building capacities, geography and other factors. District staff strive to limit the potential for students to be split up among different middle and high schools in designing potential boundary adjustments.
