DOST Davao’s Nature-Based Wastewater Treatment Facility Wins Best Infra Project in DavPrIME

DOST Davao’s Nature-Based Wastewater Treatment Facility Wins Best Infra Project in DavPrIME

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Davao Region earned top recognition in the 2024 Search for Project Implementation and Monitoring Excellence, or DavPrIME, after its Vertical Helophyte Filter System (VHFS) for the Maa Slaughterhouse in Davao City was named Best Government Infrastructure Project by the Regional Development Council XI.

The VHFS was selected for offering an innovative and cost-effective solution to wastewater treatment, an area where many local facilities struggle due to high costs of conventional systems.

The VHFS is a nature-based technology developed by DOST Davao under its Wastewater Treatment System Upgrading Program. Instead of relying on expensive mechanical equipment, the system uses helophyte plants such as reeds and carabao grass to naturally filter wastewater from the slaughterhouse. The City Government of Davao provided a 600-square-meter site within the Maa Slaughterhouse compound and worked closely with DOST Davao throughout installation and early operation.

The project impressed evaluators for its cost efficiency. Traditional wastewater treatment systems for similar facilities can cost around thirty million pesos, while the VHFS required only about one million seven hundred thousand pesos to construct. The design also minimizes maintenance expenses and reduces electricity requirements, making it a practical choice for public facilities and small communities.

The Maa Slaughterhouse, recognizing the need to comply with environmental standards, requested the assistance of DOST Davao to develop a system suited for their operations. Following construction, the slaughterhouse and the City government committed to operating and maintaining the facility, ensuring that the technology continues to support water quality improvement in the area.

The project was also recognized for its strong monitoring and follow-through. DOST Davao conducted regular field visits, water sampling, and technical support sessions to ensure the system functioned properly. Through continuous adjustments and maintenance, the VHFS consistently met wastewater quality standards and demonstrated long-term viability.

DOST Davao Regional Director Dr. Anthony C. Sales, CESO III, described the recognition as proof that science-driven solutions can be both practical and impactful.

“The Vertical Helophyte Filter System shows that innovation can be accessible. With local materials and smart design, we helped address a long-standing environmental concern in a way that is affordable and sustainable. This award validates the importance of developing technologies that communities can actually use,” he said.

The VHFS at Maa Slaughterhouse is one of several installations constructed by DOST Davao as part of its broader effort to promote low-cost and sustainable wastewater solutions in the region. The DavPrIME award strengthens the model’s potential for replication across more local government units and public facilities seeking reliable and environment-friendly treatment systems.

2GO Advances Capabilities as Philippine Logistics Demand Grows

2GO Advances Capabilities as Philippine Logistics Demand Grows

MANILA, Philippines — 2GO, the country’s leading logistics solutions provider, enters 2026 with a strong service pipeline and renewed focus on innovation, integration, and nationwide connectivity. The company is intensifying efforts across freight, express delivery, sea travel, and digital fulfilment to support businesses and consumers in a market that continues to expand.

The Philippine logistics market has shown robust growth driven by rising domestic consumption, infrastructure improvements, and digital commerce. As of 2024, the logistics industry reached an estimated USD 55.65 billion, and it is projected to grow at about 6 percent annually through 2030 as investments in transport networks and digital services deepen.

Online commerce is becoming a major force shaping logistics demand. The Philippines e-commerce sector is expected to surpass USD 28 billion in 2025 with strong double-digit annual growth as more consumers shop online and sellers scale digitally. These trends are driving significant need for reliable fulfilment, tracking, and delivery services across the country’s thousands of islands.

“Our outlook for 2026 is anchored on building smarter and more responsive logistics solutions that support economic activity where it matters most,” said Frederic C. DyBuncio, President and CEO of 2GO Group Inc. “As the Philippine economy grows, logistics becomes even more essential. Our role is to ensure goods, services, and people move reliably and efficiently across the country.”

Strengthening logistics to support growth

E-commerce remains a key growth driver for logistics in the Philippines. In response, 2GO continues to expand its express and e-commerce fulfilment capabilities with nationwide pickup, sorting, and last-mile delivery supported by digital tracking and integrated platforms. These services help businesses of all sizes reach customers faster and with greater confidence.

Beyond last-mile delivery, 2GO’s freight forwarding and special container solutions support industries with secure, temperature-controlled, and customized cargo handling requirements. These services are vital for manufacturers, agribusinesses, and exporters navigating both inter-island and international trade flows.

2GO’s sea-based logistics and ROPAX operations further strengthen its multimodal capabilities. Through sea travel and rolling cargo services, the company connects major and secondary ports, enabling the movement of passengers alongside essential goods. Recent investments in port infrastructure, including expanded passenger terminals, support stronger connectivity between Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and reflect the continued growth of inter-island mobility and commerce.

Integrated solutions for a dynamic market

As customer expectations evolve, 2GO continues to deliver integrated logistics solutions that unite land, air and sea into a connected and visible supply chain. Investments in operational efficiency, asset utilization, and customer-focused services are central to the company’s strategy for 2026.

“Growth today requires flexibility and integration,” DyBuncio added. “Our priority is to make logistics simpler for our customers by offering solutions that are reliable, scalable, and aligned with their specific needs, whether they are SMEs, large enterprises, or online sellers.”

Contributing to national development

Logistics remains a critical driver of economic resilience and inclusive growth in the Philippines. By improving seamless cargo movement, reducing handovers through point-to-point logistics solutions, and strengthening inter-island connectivity, 2GO helps keep trade costs reasonable and expands market access for businesses nationwide.

As the company enters 2026, 2GO reaffirms its commitment to supporting the country’s economic trajectory through dependable logistics, continuous service improvement, and investments that enhance mobility and trade.

“With the right infrastructure, partnerships, and people, logistics becomes a catalyst for national progress,” DyBuncio said. “That is the role 2GO will continue to play in the years ahead.”

Sheraton Cebu Mactan Celebrates Dual Michelin Recognition in the Philippines’ First-Ever Michelin Guide

Sheraton Cebu Mactan Celebrates Dual Michelin Recognition in the Philippines’ First-Ever Michelin Guide

MACTAN, CEBU — Known for its turquoise waters, vibrant marine life, and seamless blend of island calm and cosmopolitan energy, Mactan Island has long drawn visitors from around the world. This year, as the Michelin Guide officially debuts in the Philippines, the island celebrates a remarkable milestone — Sheraton Cebu Mactan, owned and developed by AppleOne Group, earns dual recognition from the prestigious guide, further cementing its place on the global hospitality map.

Leading the honors is DIP Nikkei, a Michelin Selected restaurant renowned for its refined modern Nikkei cuisine. It masterfully blends Japanese precision with Latin American flair, showcased through captivating ocean views and designer interiors—herringbone parquet floors, mosaic walls, and rattan chairs—that craft a refined yet unpretentious vibe.

This elegance extends to an expertly curated menu starring ceviche hiramasa & hotate tiradito and 16-hour cochinillo lechal confit, all elevated by charming professional service, inventive cocktails, and a modest wine list. DIP Nikkei embodies Mactan’s irresistible seaside soul, inviting diners to savor this harmonious culinary fusion.

The resort itself also received Michelin Selected distinction, recognized for offering an exceptional hospitality experience that blends thoughtful design, elevated service, and an authentic sense of place, bringing to life a contemporary vision of coastal luxury that’s relaxed, connected, and distinctly Filipino.

Redefining coastal luxury

While Mactan has long served as Cebu’s gateway for tourism, the Michelin recognition marks a new chapter in its evolution, from a stopover to a true destination. Set along a white-sand stretch of coastline just 30 minutes from the airport, Sheraton Cebu Mactan invites travelers to step directly into resort living that is both elevated and easy, proving that luxury can feel both world-class and welcoming.

According to the Michelin Guide, “Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort is the perfect base for exploring Cebu’s beaches and cultural sites,” with its island-largest rooms and suites featuring balconies, soaking tubs, and garden or sea views—plus a six-room spa, kids’ club, watersports, and expansive pool for seamless relaxation and adventure. This coastal haven transforms every stay into an unforgettable blend of Filipino warmth and global sophistication.

The recognition also reflects AppleOne Group’s broader vision to uplift hospitality across the Visayas and Mindanao through global partnerships, region-first developments, and investment in local culinary innovation.

Within the resort, that vision comes to life through diverse dining experiences from Nikkei creations at DIP, to Mediterranean flavors at Buhi Bar, to modern Filipino favorites at 5 Cien, and an artisanal bakery-café at the lobby. Together, these outlets showcase the depth and consistency that helped Sheraton Cebu Mactan earn its Michelin nod.

Celebration of place and people

This milestone is a testament to Mactan’s potential: to move beyond being just a gateway and stand confidently as a destination in its own right,” shares Dottie Würgler-Cronin, General Manager of Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort. “Excellence should not be concentrated in just one city. Mactan has its own contemporary, coastal identity that’s deeply Filipino yet globally resonant. This recognition affirms that.

This recognition reinforces what we’ve always believed, that Cebu has the talent, heart, and world-class potential to stand proudly on the global stage,” adds Samantha Manigsaca, VP for Hospitality at AppleOne Group. “Sheraton Cebu Mactan reflects how the island continues to grow. One that’s rooted in its culture, elevated by its people, and open to the world.”

As the holiday season welcomes travelers to the island, Sheraton Cebu Mactan’s dual Michelin recognition stands as both a celebration of Filipino excellence and an invitation to experience the Philippines anew through genuine warmth, modern craftsmanship, and the quiet confidence of Cebu’s hospitality.

Social good collaboration brings end to paper-based ICT learning

‘They press keys on paper pages’

Social good collaboration brings end to paper-based ICT learning

carview.php?tsp=

The Digital Learning Hub project by SM Foundation, in collaboration with SM Retail and Mastercard helps Jefmin Elementary School in Concepcion, Tarlac produce ICT-ready pupils.

The pupils of Jefmin Elementary School (JES) have long struggled with putting into life the lessons in Teacher Jeri Micka Galang’s subject: Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Galang has tried her best to show students how certain computer features work—even if it meant leaving it to the students’ imaginations how basic computer software like Paint and Word function by looking at them through the pages of an ICT book. Despite these efforts, Galang felt that ICT is an inherently practical subject, which may only be effectively taught with actual computers like the ones provided by the SM Foundation and its social good partners, an initiative that the teacher has called a leap towards readiness for dealing with the evolving technology

carview.php?tsp=

The DigiHub is expected to support the learning of approximately 300 students per school year in JES due to the complete computer setup, helping ICT educators like Teacher Jeri Micka Galang demonstrate lessons effectively.

“The hardest part is seeing that the students need to have hands-on activities, but we only have books as a reference. They press the keys on paper pages. But without computers, how will the students know that when you press this key, this function pops up?” Galang said, stressing the importance of interactive experience in ICT classes for lesson retention.

The teacher added that digital literacy, now more than ever, is a crucial tool to help students properly navigate digital platforms and protect themselves from scams.

With only 25 tablets, three students had to share one device during classes, adding to the hindrance of ICT learning for Galang’s students.

“We seldom use the tablets because they take so much time to charge, and the applications load very slowly. There are also lessons that cannot be conducted with tablets,” Galang explained.

carview.php?tsp=

Students of Bayanan II Elementary School in Mindoro are excited for the full operation of the newly turned-over DigiHub as they are bound for interactive and practical ICT lessons, which could prepare them for secondary education.

The collaboration’s DigiHub provides 20 computer sets, a smart TV, headsets, and enhanced safety with upgraded wiring and window grills.

Galang added that less than five students per class owned a computer at home, but these students also happened to be the children of her co-teachers.

Greater heights

carview.php?tsp=

Beneficiaries of the DigiHub project are being transformed by the digital equipment provided to the schools, allowing them to further compete in digital competitions, such as in Sta. Filomena Elementary School in Iligan City.

Apart from the expected strengthening of JES students’ digital literacy, the DigiHub project has also given the school a headstart to finally compete in the collaborative and desktop publishing category of the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC).

“Before the SM DigiHub, we had no capacity to train students for the desktop publishing competition. We only send contestants for the writing categories, so this is one of the activities made possible by the DigiHub project that I really look forward to,” Galang said with optimism as JES has performed well in the schools press conferences, clinching first place in some categories.

“This DigiHub will really equip our students for high school. The computers will help them have a background on how to use word processors, which is also crucial for research subjects,” Galang said.

At JES, more than 300 students from grades 4 to 6, with three sections each, are set to benefit from the DigiHub, supplementing their existing tablets.

“We are so grateful that they did not hesitate to support to the children. They gave us hope that our students will leave the school with knowledge of digital tools,” Galang said.

The DigiHub, an initiative by SM Foundation and its social good partners Mastercard, Ace Hardware, and SM Store, aims to bolster digital education to help bridge gaps in digital literacy.

A social good collaboration of the foundation with Mastercard, SM Retail, and Ace Hardware, the project has so far transformed digital literacy initiatives various schools across the country, including Lemery Pilot Elementary School in Batangas, Tuba Central School in Benguet, Jugan Elementary School in Cebu, Macasandig Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City, and Sta. Filomena Central School in Lanao del Norte, SRES in Tagum, Bayanan II Elementary School in Mindoro, and Jefmin Elementary School in Tarlac.
