Follow the three-step process below to understand your digital brand.
Step I. Using a desktop or laptop computer (preferably one you have not used often to check out your own online profiles), open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Explorer, Firefox, etc.).
Step II. Enter your name in the search box in quotes, like this: “William Arruda” (use your name the way people would use it when they are researching you). Press enter to see your results.
Step III. Refer to your Google results and answer the following questions:
1. What's the total number of responses Google returned?
(You will find this number below the search box on the Google results page. Don't include any punctuation, e.g. comma, period.)
2. What's the total number of responses on the first page of results?*
Count a row of images as one response and a row of videos as one response. (Typically 10 unless you have changed the default Google setting.)
3. Now go back to just the first three pages of your Google results and manually total up the responses that are NOT about you.*
(They are about someone else with your name.) Enter the total for pages 1, 2, and 3. (If the total is zero, enter 0.)
4. Now looking at only the results that ARE about YOU on the first three pages, select the option that best describes your results?*
No relevance - The results that are about me have no relation to how I want to be known.
Little relevance - A few of the results that are about me communicate how I want to be known.
Some relevance - About half the entries that are about me express my area of expertise, and there are references to my website/blog, or online profiles.
High relevance - About three-quarters of the entries that are about me clearly express my personal brand (how I want to be known).
Complete relevance - All or almost all of the results that are about me are very consistent with my area of expertise, aspirations, and how I want to be known.
5. Select from the options below the statement that best describes the career level for which you are aiming.*
(This assessment is aspirational, meaning you want to evaluate your online profile as it relates to the next step in your career.)
6. Did your personal website, blog and/or your LinkedIn profile appear in the top three search results on page 1 of search results?*
7. On the first page of search results, are there any results listed that are inaccurate, negative or unflattering about you that you wish were not there?*
8. Did any videos of you show up on the first page of search results?*
9. Did any images of you show up on the first page of search results?*
10. Did any real-time data (e.g. a recent blog or post) show up?*
11. Do you have at least three recommendations in your LinkedIn profile?*
12. Do you have endorsements or external validation from others that show up in the first three pages of your Google Results (for example: testimonials from people with whom you have worked, quotes in an article, announcements of awards, etc.).*
