Upper Bear Creek to cease adding fluoride to water
BEAR CREEK Beginning March 1, Upper Bear Creek Water Treatment Plant, will discontinue adding fluoride into the water supply, which will affect its three water customers - Haleyville, Bear Creek and Phil Campbell.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - After a year’s hiatus, the Empty Bowls dinner, which benefits both the Winston County Arts Council and Main Street Ministries, is coming back Thursday, Feb. 5.
County faces federal funding cuts

HALEYVILLE A comparison of figures from last year’s to this year’s Winston County Commission budget shows the county had some funding triumphs with grants funding projects and employee raises, while also showing significant funding cuts in some key areas.

Governor awards grant to Addie’s Place
Governor Kay Ivey has awarded a grant to Addie’s Place, which serves children in Winston and Marion counties.
Alabamian to offer candidate profiles for primary elections
2026 is an election year, and the Alabamian is offering local, state and federal candidates the option to run candidate profiles, either free or paid.
Qualifying underway for primary elections
WINSTON COUNTY - Qualifying began Monday, Jan. 5, in preparation for the May 19 primary elections, which will feature such county offices as sheriff, revenue commissioner, both districts of the county commission, as well as several state and federal offices.

ARLEY - An agreement has been reached between the Alabama Department of Transportation and Winston County Commission, approving $2 million in state monies to resurface County Road 77, otherwise known as Helicon Road, from County Road 41 in Arley to County Road 22 in Helicon.
Annual legislative forum moves to new location

HALEYVILLE - Now that Dr. Bill Bishop has been named Haleyville City Schools superintendent, his former central office position of Director of Administrative Services has been dissolved, with his former responsibilities divided among three long-time system administrators.
Local officials worried about potential tax change
Local county commissions are urging municipal governments to approve resolutions to intervene in an ongoing lawsuit concerning proceeds from the Alabama Simplified Seller Use Tax, the outcome of which could eventually create a big blow to county and municipal funding.

DOUBLE SPRINGS -The Double Springs Christmas parade has been rescheduled to Sunday Dec. 7, 4 p.m. The public is encouraged to come out and enjoy Christmas cheer in the town of Double Springs this Sunday, organizers say. The parade, which is annually the first Monday of December, had already been moved to Thursday Dec. 4, due to weather, but rainy weather on Thursday caused the parade to be rescheduled again.

9-1-1 needs public to update information
WINSTON COUNTY - Although Winston County’s new computer-aided dispatch system went online November 10, to provide more timely information to first responders, the system will only be effective if the public has given their correct and updated addresses to dispatchers.
