𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐏𝐅'𝐬 𝟔𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 - 𝐅𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐞
Friendly Prairie was MPF’s first acquisition, purchased in 1969 for $10,000. This purchase was of great significance to the conservation community and the group of volunteers that had founded MPF just three years before, and showed that MPF was determined to act swiftly to protect remaining prairie in the state.
The 40-acre Friendly Prairie, named for its historic use as an informal stop for travelers, is an old-growth, dry-mesic chert prairie, with more than 300 species of native plants, four documented state-listed species of conservation concern—including the regal fritillary butterfly—and numerous species of grassland birds. Despite its relatively small size, Friendly Prairie sustains a remarkably diverse native plant community. Friendly Prairie is part of a 520-acre grassland complex, including MPF's 400-acre Lordi Marker Prairie and MPF's 80-acre Drovers' Prairie. As with all of MPF's properties, Friendly Prairie and MPF's adjacent properties are open to the public to enjoy on foot.
Since the purchase of Friendly Prairie, MPF has acquired, to protect in perpetuity, more than 5,000 acres of land in 36 tracts, including some of the most biologically diverse, old-growth remnant prairies in the state. In honor of MPF’s 60th anniversary, our Prairie Postcards in 2026 will highlight the history of MPF’s acquisitions of prairie and other native grasslands. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞! 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨
MPF’s Grow Native! program welcomes a new Certified Pro into the Grow Native! Professional Certification Program (GNPCP), which provides a consistent credential in the use of native plants for landscaping in developed areas of the lower Midwest. Grow Native! offered a testing opportunity for the GNPCP on December 12 at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.
Test results confirmed that 𝐎𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐬, gardener for the City of Springfield, Missouri, earned certification after the December test. Oren joins the other Grow Native! Certified Pros who have achieved certification since the program launched in 2022.
Testing opportunities for 2026 continue to be scheduled, and include:
–February 27, 2026, Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, Missouri
–March 13, 2026, Drury University, Springfield, Missouri
–March 27, 2026, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri
–April 3, 2026, Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, Kansas City, Missouri

Join Kent H. Sanmann, Natural Resources Instructor with The College of the Muscogee Nation, for a webinar on the historical and contemporary importance of river cane to Native Americans, particularly the tribes in the Southeast.
Learn about current restoration efforts within the Muscogee Nation to return river cane to its critical role as a keystone species in riparian areas, and how this native plant mitigates many water quality issues within the Nation.
River cane’s potential for hydrocarbon remediation and carbon sequestration will be discussed, as well as conservation efforts presently underway to safeguard access to this all-star plant for indigenous cultural practices for many generations to come. This BONAP range map illustrates the distribution of river cane—also known as giant cane—including in Missouri.

𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐬: 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭
While the prairie may look quiet under a winter frost, a diverse world persists beneath the surface, particularly under the chimneys of crayfish burrows. Within prairie soil, grassland crayfish (𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑠) act as ecosystem engineers, creating horizontal and vertical tunnels that reach below the frost line, with some as deep as 15 feet. These “subterranean sanctuaries” maintain a stable, warmer environment used as refuge from the freeze by dozens of other species (as well as respite from summer droughts).
Other animals that benefit from the warmth of these burrows include the northern crawfish frog (𝐿𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠), Graham’s crayfish snake (𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑎 𝑔𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑖), the small-mouthed salamander (𝐴𝑚𝑏𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑚𝑎 𝑡𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑚), and many invertebrates like dragonfly larvae, wolf spiders, ground beetles, and small crustaceans like sowbugs (isopods). The grassland crayfish is one of eight species of burrowing crayfish in Missouri; their habitats include grasslands, wetlands, and floodplains.

The Missouri Prairie Foundation's annually published 16-page Grow Native! Resource Guide includes a directory of Grow Native! professional members who grow and sell native seeds, plants, shrubs, and trees; provide native plant landscaping services including landscaping architecture, design, land care, and tree care; and are organizations or communities that educate and support native landscaping. The guide—available in print and as a searchable online resource—also provides tips on native plants to address specific landscaping situations.
