“We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy, but we believe that from the fracture we can build something bigger, better, stronger, more just. This is the task of the middle powers, the countries that have the most to lose from a world of fortresses and the most to gain from genuine cooperation.
“The powerful have their power. But we have something too: the capacity to stop pretending, to name realities, to build our strength at home, and to act together.” - Mark Carney, Canadian PM correctly signals the end of the US as a world leader.
Honestly the whole speech is fantastic and is included at the end of that report.
The USA is still a "super power", just the same as China and Russia, but we can no longer be depended on. As Johnathan V. Last wrote “Europe must consider any pause in America’s attempt to annex Greenland as temporary and subject to renewal whenever 40,000 Wisconsinites are aggrieved about the price of eggs.”
So as much as it pains me to say it, we as a country have willfully given up our leadership role in the world.
I want to be crystal clear - We as a country can still change how we act and live, and I will fight everyday for that outcome. I just don't expect the world's opinion of us as unreliable to change.
