Knowledge Futures is an independent nonprofit organization that partners
directly with knowledge creators to make information useful. Founded in 2018 as
a partnership between the MIT Press and the MIT Media Lab, Knowledge Futures has
since developed technology, a process of collaboration, and an exceptional team
that work to change existing knowledge-sharing paradigms for the better.
Timeline
May 2018: the MIT Press and MIT Media Lab formally co-found the MIT Knowledge Futures Group
November 2018: Public “Create New Community” button launches on PubPub, enabling anyone to use the platform
July 2019: Receive first multi-institutional grant with support from the Sloan Foundation
November 2019: Sign first publisher contract with the American Psychological Association
March 2020: KF formally receives 501(c)(3) status to operate as an independent non profit organization
March 2021: PubPub reaches 1,000 Communities
April 2021: All Creative Commons licenses made available for free for all Communities on PubPub
June 2021: The Business of Knowing, launches as the first series in the KF Commonplace
August 2021: Knowledge Futures, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), eLife/Sciety, and EMBO announce and pilot the new DocMaps framework
February 2022: KF announces $2mm in funding from Reid Hoffman, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to pursue a sustainability model
May 2022: Knowledge Futures announces new partnership with Arcadia Science
December 2022: PubPub reaches 5,000 Communities
April 2024: Zachary Verdin becomes the second Executive Director of Knowledge Futures; Travis Rich establishes the organization's Research and Development team
July 2024: KF introduces PubPub Platform

Knowledge Futures, Inc is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
We are committed to the independence and autonomy of Knowledge Futures's
products and communities. We do not accept funding that would affect our
ability to pursue work free of external interference, and we protect the
independence of our staff, communities, and partners in their intellectual
activities and relationships. We build our products in concert with the
people who use them, implementing a bottom-up, community-led approach.
