An ABC for Baby Linguists, 2nd edition

An ABC for Baby Linguists, 2nd edition
Michael Bernstein
Overview | Cover | Order form
Overview
A book for our youngest linguists! From A to Z, this endearing ABC book presents an entire alphabet of linguistics terms in rhyming couplets. You'll find fun surprises, common and uncommon words, and no footnotes. This alphabet book focuses on phonetics and phonology.
The second edition adds 4 important IPA symbols beyond the ABC, because you are never too young to start learning additional sound-symbol correspondences!
Two cautions are in order: (1) The actual book is not tear-proof, chew-proof, drool-proof, or tasty. A baby linguist can easily turn this book (like most books) into an assortment of choking hazards. (2) An ABC for Baby Linguists is not complete preparation for graduate studies in linguistics. For that, we recommend also ordering Surviving Linguistics: A Guide for Graduate Students.
Sample pages
Acknowledgments and inside information
The book was inspired by a suggestion at the January 2013 LSA meeting in Boston. It is typeset in Della Respira, a font by Nathan Willis based on the 1902 Della Robbia typeface design by Thomas Maitland Cleland. The Victorian corner ornament is by Intellecta Design. The occasional letter animals are formed entirely by adding diacritics. The spectrogram of 9-month-old David babbling was created using Praat. The author is immensely grateful to Lisa Hodsdon for her support, to David Bernstein for taking naps, to Alejna Brugos for comments and discussion, and to numerous friends and family for their encouragement.
About the author
Michael Bernstein studied linguistics at Swarthmore College and Cornell University. He founded Cascadilla Press and Cascadilla Proceedings Project, and his personal baby linguist is now taller than he is. An ABC for Baby Linguists is his first book.
