The mission of Matheon is application driven mathematics.
Our scientists develop new methods in modeling, simulation, and optimization for real world processes in all key technology areas. The research covers projects in the areas Clinical Research and Health Care, Metropolitan Infrastructure, Optical Technologies, Sustainable Energies, as well as Geometric Design and Visualization. New methodologies are developed in interdisciplinary cooperation with project partners from industry, economy and science.Matheon also cooperates with schools and the general public to raise public awareness in the wide applicability of mathematics and to attract new generations of young researchers.

Prof. Gitta Kutyniok honored with SIAM Fellowship
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, SIAM, elected Gitta Kutyniok as a Fellow 2019, for her contributions to applied harmonic analysis (wavelet-theory, shearlet-theory, time-frequency analysis, etc.), compressed sensing, and imaging sciences. The SIAM Fellows Program recognizes members of SIAM who have made outstanding contributions to their discipline. Kutyniok is Einstein-Professor for Applied Functional Analysis at TU Berlin. Within MATH+, she is, amongst others, PI, member of the BMS Executive Board, and Special Coordinator for “Mathematics of Data Science.“ read more »

ERC Advanced Grant for Prof. Gavril Farkas
The European Research Council has awarded an ERC Advanced Grant in the sum of 2.15 million euros to Gavril Farkas for his proposal “Syzygies, moduli and topological invariants of groups.“ He intends to use the grant for a large research group that will continue to investigate the idea of connecting the different fields of algebra and topology. Gavril Farkas is Professor for Algebraic Geometry at the HU Berlin, member of the BMS Executive Board, and MATH+ Principle Investigator. read more »

Dr. Friederike Hellwig (HU Berlin) has received the Dr.-Klaus-Körper Prize for her excellent dissertation "Adaptive Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin Finite-Element-Methods".
Dr. Dietmar Gallistl (formerly HU Berlin, now U Twente (NL)) was awarded the Richard von Mises Prize for his outstanding work on the discretization of elliptic problems of higher order.

The International Association for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) has awarded two of this year's prizes to BMS and Matheon alumni.Dr. Friederike Hellwig (HU Berlin) has received the Dr.-Klaus-Körper Prize for her excellent dissertation "Adaptive Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin Finite-Element-Methods".
Dr. Dietmar Gallistl (formerly HU Berlin, now U Twente (NL)) was awarded the Richard von Mises Prize for his outstanding work on the discretization of elliptic problems of higher order.

Nicolas Perkowski receives Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize of the DFG
The junior professor at the HU Berlin and research group leader at the MPI for Mathematics in Natural Sciences in Leipzig is honored with the most important German young researchers award in recognition of his scientific achievements in the field of probability theory. His research focuses on singular stochastic partial differential equations, applied stochastic analysis, and robust financial mathematics. Perkowski is BMS alumnus. Together with colleagues, he leads the MATH+ projects AA1-3 and AA4-1. read more »

Cleaning up in Space: Berlin School Team is testing its development on board the ISS on 28.01.
The grand finale of this year's MIT and NASA competition SPHERES will take place on January 28th, 15:00 - and students from the Berlin-based Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium will join the event via internet connection in Alicante (Spain). Then astronauts on the ISS will fly the mini satellites programmed by 14 international school teams. Their task this time: Collecting dangerous space junk, which increasingly threatens satellites and other flying space objects such as the ISS. The Berlin participants, supported by the Research Center Matheon and now the new Cluster of Excellence MATH +, have been among the top teams for many years. read more »
