I was constantly bullied in school all the way to my junior high. I was quiet, shy, scared and I was carrying the burden of two secrets. I had been molested prior to leaving Cuba, with my mother and older brother, by a male family friend, neighbor and I was fighting my own sexuality, I liked other boys, but was terrified of any other classmates or even my family from realizing my secrets. So I retrieved. I had no friends, male or female. I now think that it was because of my molestation that I just couldn’t trust anyone. My best friends were my characters, writing became my survival, my escape, my therapy. Through my characters I could be everything that I wanted to to, who ever I wanted to be except my real self. In my stories I was popular, I had friends, girlfriends, I was strong, outgoing, I was not gay. I hated that part of me. I fear it because I knew if my mother knew it would hurt her. She loved me more than her own life and my abuser new it. He told me, “you are to never tell your mother about what happened here today (in his bedroom, where I was trapped) because you know your mother’s temper, she would kill me and go to jail.” He was right, so I never told anyone. My mother died in 2001 (this happened in 1968) and I never told her. My father till this day doesn’t know. My abuser is still living in Cuba, with wife and children. A few years back I wrote a screenplay titled “Shared Scars” in here I tell my sexual abuse story, my rape is more like it. I’ve written 9 screenplays as an adult and I continue to put my stories out there, through pitches and contest. I write everyday, my stories are all human stories, overcoming adversity stories. I have total faith in God that very soon I will find someone who will want to champion my stories and produce them. Writing saved my life and it is a gift from God I will always cherish, protect and continue to cultivate. Art, creativity, saves lives and must be encouraged and protected.
