Fri, 17 Jun 2016 16:41:12 +0000https://whatwasithinking.wordpress.com/?p=1473#comment-20156Fine and dandy for the tankini lovers, but what about us Speedo freaks? I LOVE those one-piece racing suits because for years they were the one kind of suit that fit my three requirements for summer-they fit, they flattered, and the actually allowed for real swimming and diving off the diving board. Not only that, but they have these way cool funky graphic designs that are right up my alley-I’ve been a tomboy all my life, so I have zero taste for flowery designs, ruffles, skirts, or anything girly-girl like that. (in fact, the last time I wore a dress was on my wedding day 17 years ago!) However, thanks to that wonderful curse called perimenopause on top of having two kids, I now have 30 extra pounds of belly fat that not only looks fugly, but also has ruined shopping for me, bathing-suit wise. I’m at the point now where I literally cannot find ANYTHING that fits me in stores like Dick’s (the highest their sizes go is 38). Stores like Target, Walmart, Kmart, or any other retail establishment go straight from bikinis to “blue-haired lady” suits with tons of ruffles and those stupid skirts that a tomboy like me wouldn’t be caught dead in. BLECH! I still have a Speedo that fits (thank the Goddess for that), but shopping for my teenage daughter who is following in my swim goggles was a traumatic experience when she had no trouble finding terrific-looking suits and all I could find made me look like Shamu. Don’t even get me started on placed like Torrid-their suits were not only all two-piece, but flat-out hideous. THAT was an epic fail!
At least I have had no trouble finding pants that fit-men’s pants have been a lifesaver for YEARS! The measurements are in inches (waist and inseam) instead of numerical sizes that are constantly being manipulated from year to year, they’re far more durable than women’s pants, and they cost way less than women’s pants. As a stay-at-home mom, durability and cost are higher priorities. But bathing suits are my Waterloo. Once my trusty Speedo dies, I’m probably gonna be forced to hide in a T-shirt and men’s swim trunks because women’s suits just it’ll be the only thing that works!
And to those who say “just diet and exercise,” be aware that I walk everywhere I can (which does NOTHING for weight loss when you’re a former swimmer!), watch what and how much I eat, and do all the housework/yard work as manually as possible! The town I live in has NO swimming pool, and our gas budget prevents me from traveling to the nearest Y (try a MINIMUM of 12 miles away!). I’m not a runner-never have been. Even at peak physical condition, in foot races for PE I was always the schmuck coming in dead last, and when it comes to other sports (especially involving balls), I’ve got ten thumbs and two left feet. So short of liposuction and a tummy tuck, I’m pretty much SOL.
Thanks for letting me rant. Let’s just hope the designers hear it.

Fri, 12 Jun 2015 18:33:23 +0000https://whatwasithinking.wordpress.com/about-2/#comment-20093Well hello there in the mid-Atlantic. I was looking for a bathing suit for a rather large 12 year old, on whom almost fits a women’s size 14, but a little long in the torso. Anyway, I got tired of coming up with search terms like, plus size prepubescent girls, and finally googled bathing suits for chubby kids, and I wound up on your blog about buying a beautiful bathing suit and wearing it proudly. Glad to meet you Susie. I hope by now, June, 2015, you have discovered what the heck is going on in your head. I have digressed from my quest, but I must say, I’m glad to have been sidetracked. I hope you are well.

Now I’m so Fat and I hate the thought’s of putting on a swimsuit. My children are all gone from home and my husband wants to travel to all these exotic places before we get to old to do so. I’ve spent hours trying to find a swimsuit, and I to always go for the black, hoping I will disappear from site!!! I’m going to try to change my thinking! Thanks for the wonderful advise. life if to short to stress! This year I’m going to be fat and fab!!! Oprah has said you need to make sure you buy a suit that is large enough. We tend to buy the same size as our street clothes and suits run one to two sizes smaller. Stop wearing the skirts and wear a normal bottom for a change and always put on self tanner before you go shop for a suit because it makes you feel more confident! I’ve tried it and it works!
