Our
Mission

— Understand & protect
Research
Ocean Alliance studies whales. Why? Generally speaking, most people and countries worldwide want to save whales – only a few countries still hunt whales. The problem is that we don’t know how best to protect them. Whales are challenging to study and difficult to understand. The solution to this is science. Only science can help us better understand whales so that we can more effectively protect them.

— Global impact
Scientific collaboration
True to our name, Ocean Alliance is an organization of serial collaboration. We have worked in over 30 countries worldwide and have strong relationships with research institutions, universities, advocacy groups, environmentalists, educators, filmmakers, artists, government bodies, photographers, etc.

— Knowledge sharing
Education
Ocean Alliance aims to educate the public about whales, the threats they face, and the ways we can contribute to their protection.
Greater awareness fosters more action to aid whales and places pressure on governments to enact stronger protective legislation for these extraordinary animals.
The Arts
Ocean Alliance’s founder, Dr. Roger Payne, always believed that the arts were crucial to conservation efforts. A musician himself, Dr. Payne instilled this within Ocean Alliance’s ethos, and it is a legacy we continue to this day.
Art helps us reach more diverse audiences and engages and stimulates connections between humanity and the natural world in ways that science cannot.
