Shorty Awards Winners Unveiled In New York City

On March 3, Shorty Award winners were announced at TheTimesCenter in New York City during an eclectic ceremony hosted by CNN’s Rick Sanchez. The evening was full of surprises, including a video by William Shatner reading some of his favorite tweets from @sh*tmydadsays, and a stage-rush by weird category finalist David McDonald protesting a win by The Llama.
Winners giving 140-character acceptance speeches included Newark mayor Cory Booker, Sesame Street’s Grover, and indie rocker Ted Leo. The night also featured video speeches by Suze Orman, Rachel Maddow, Brazilian pop superstar Ivete Sangalo, and a performance of Othello in under 140 seconds by the Reduced Shakespeare Company.
Haitian TV presenter Carel Pedre, a finalist in the innovation category, received a special humanitarian Shorty Award for tweets that shed light on the devastating earthquake in his country. Janis Krums received a Real-Time Photo Shorty Award for his camera phone shot of U.S. Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River.
Once the ceremony was all over, winners, finalists, and other members of the twitterati gathered for a cocktail reception to meet, greet, and tweet some more. We’ll be posting photos from the night to Flickr and clips to YouTube over the next few days. You can watch the video in its entirety at ShortyAwards.com.
