Notepad++ is to text editors what IrfranView is to image viewers. Lightweight and fast, but surprisingly full featured. The only (minor) limitation stems from its Scintilla core: its RegEx search engine doesn't support alternations. But it more than makes up for via passive selection and token hilighting. It also boasts an impressive collection of plugins. Try it for a week, and you'll wonder how you managed to get by on Notepad for as long as you did. (Side note: Notepad++ falls in the mid-range of Scintilla editors in terms of size and features. The lightest but most limited ones are Notepad2 and SciTE; Bigger and comprehensive IDEs include Geany and Code::Blocks. All Scintilla editors are GPL and available on SourceForge.)

Notepad++ seems to strike just the right balance between power and a simple UI. It seems to have all the features I'm looking for in a Windows text editor while keeping an attractive, clean interface. One feature I really like is the ability to setup commands that can be run (e.g., "compile this file" or "run this script") without having to switch to a command line window.
