  It is a good text editor, but the system is binary (thumbs up or down) and there are two issues that are game breakers in my case. notepad++'s support for custom languages is lack-luster at best. It is particularly hard to even do something as basic as a C-like language and have code-folding with { } Without having issues like seeing { not behave as token separators. It is also hard to have more than 3 kinds of comments. And impossible to add nested delimited comments. Other editors like jEdit, (g)vim, emacs or Kate are a lot more powerful for custom languages. it is also windows-only. Running WINE or paying for a windows license is too much trouble specially when considering that there are other text editors not bounded to an operating system that is neither free as in freedom nor as beer. If you plan to use it for mainstream languages and have purchased a windows license, this editor may be good for you.

  Notepad++ is to text editors what IrfranView is to image viewers. Lightweight and fast, but surprisingly full featured. The only (minor) limitation stems from its Scintilla core: its RegEx search engine doesn't support alternations. But it more than makes up for via passive selection and token hilighting. It also boasts an impressive collection of plugins. Try it for a week, and you'll wonder how you managed to get by on Notepad for as long as you did. (Side note: Notepad++ falls in the mid-range of Scintilla editors in terms of size and features. The lightest but most limited ones are Notepad2 and SciTE; Bigger and comprehensive IDEs include Geany and Code::Blocks. All Scintilla editors are GPL and available on SourceForge.)

  Notepad++ seems to strike just the right balance between power and a simple UI. It seems to have all the features I'm looking for in a Windows text editor while keeping an attractive, clean interface. One feature I really like is the ability to setup commands that can be run (e.g., "compile this file" or "run this script") without having to switch to a command line window.
