Multi Theft Auto (MTA) is an open-source software project that adds full on-line gaming support to Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PC game, in which this functionality is not originally found. It is the first open-source modification that adds a highly customizable network play element to a commercial closed-source single-player PC game.
Developed as an experimental piece of software for earlier Grand Theft Auto series, Multi Theft Auto has become an advanced multiplayer platform for gamers and developers. Our software provides on-line gaming for dozens of players running user-generated gameplay content and scripts through a Lua virtual machine, and is freely distributed under the GPLv3 license.
For more information, see our Wikipedia page or GitHub source code repository.
We hope you all had a Happy Winterval and a wonderful new year!
So
it's 2010, another year with hot prospects for MTA, which we hope
you'll all look out for in near future. The development team are
currently deciding our next course of action regarding MTA:SA. 1.0.3 is
our most stable version yet, hence it is likely that our next objective
will be for the next major version - 1.1. This should aim to implement
some new key features as well as bug fixes, mostly those that didn't
make it into 1.0. Remember, MTA:SA is open-source
so anyone's contributions can make it into the final product! Our
forums are still very much open to suggestions, though we do have an
idea of what kind of features to start with. We're hoping to see the
return of Handling support, Character skins (such as Big smoke or Wu Zi
Mu) and full serial support. We'll keep you informed on progress of the
mod.
In other news, MTA:SA has made it to the Top 100 mods of 2009 at ModDB! We're extremely proud and excited to have made it thus far, but it's not over yet. We are the only nominee for any
GTA game that has made it into the Top 100. We urge MTA fans and GTA
fans alike to show their love and revote for the next stage of the
ModDB awards (votes towards the first stage do not count for this
phase). Simply click the button below, scroll down and click on "Grand
Theft Auto San Andreas", then hit Vote for Multi Theft Auto San Andreas
when it appears!
Thanks, and good luck to all the other mods out there.
Ever since we expanded our news and media coverage to websites like Twitter, YouTube, Steam Community and ModDB, we have been working hard in order to promote Multi Theft Auto among the Grand Theft Auto players out there.
If you like our mod, be sure to show us your support by nominating Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas for this year's ModDB Mod of the Year 2009 Awards. Simply click on the banner below, then click on the Vote for mod button on our mod's page at ModDB.
We certainly have strong competition going in the modding world out there, but with a bit of luck we might just get Multi Theft Auto the popularity it deserves.
That said, we would like to wish you happy holidays. Have a good one and enjoy this video.
The time has come to push out our project's latest point release: Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas v1.0.3.
This important update addresses a variety of high priority gameplay and network issues. Since most of the fixes for these issues took place in the server software, clients that are playing on older servers may still be affected. Therefore, if you're running any v1.0.x servers, we strongly advise you to upgrade for the benefit of your players.
Major changes in this release include fixes for occasional player and vehicle desynchronization, improved synchronization for servers with a high amounts of players and a reduction of synchronization trouble errors. Minor changes include IP-range banning (e.g. 10.0.*.*), improved error messages for SQL functions, the addition of a minimal/non-verbose server console (-t command-line option) and updates to a number of scripting functions (refer to our Wiki for more information). Additionally, some security has been added in regard to the use of unvalidated user data files (e.g. handling) to prevent the use of modified data when playing, which can optionally be enabled by the server.
As always, this release is accompanied with the latest resource package that provides several basic gameplay modes for your server. Changes in this package include updates to the 'admin' and 'race' resources. See the multitheftauto-resources changelog for more information (changes r491 to r502).
Thanks goes out to ccw for maintaining this release, and of course all other developers that contributed to this project!
To see a full list of changes, check out the changelog. To download our software, scroll to the top of this page.
The next point release for our best mod to date is out: Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas 1.0.2.
One of our developers, ccw, did a tremendous job with resolving the most frequent problems and bugs from earlier releases. Major changes are fixes for a number of occasional crashes and assertions plus some improvements for our race gamemode, as part of the multitheftauto-resources project.
This release is of course fully compatible with the servers running on older versions (1.0 / 1.0.1), so there should be no problems with compatibility once you upgrade. Precompiled servers for Linux should be available shortly on https://linux.mtasa.com and/or our GitHub download page.
Interested? Good! Check the download button at the top of this page!
As always, the full list of changes can be found in the Changelog on our repository.
---It's worth noting that several interesting Multi Theft Auto related projects have been started by some of our fellow developers, since the decision was made to open-source our project (and allow more insight for everyone) a while ago.
One such project is the MTA Script Editor (MTASE), a development environment/editor for Multi Theft Auto resources that is being created by a group of dedicated developers.
The software incorporates some nice features such as a Lua and XML syntax checker and highlighter, resource management, extensive support for testing, and is a future candidate for an official IDE that may be distributed with Multi Theft Auto.

Additional information on MTASE, as well as it's latest alpha version 0.2.6 can be found on the MTASE Wiki page and Forum topic.
We are proud to present Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas 1.0.1 - the latest version of our Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas software and the successor to the recently released Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas 1.0.
Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas v1.0.1 is focused on fixing some high priority client and server crashes, resolving compatibility issues and improving cross-platform compatibility (including support for running on Mac OS X) for the dedicated server, while fixing some various major bugs within the client and resources package.
This release is backwards compatible with our previous release (v1.0). This means that you can use the new v1.0.1 client to connect to v1.0 servers, however we still encourage server owners to upgrade to the latest version due to the number of issues that were fixed in this release.
On a sidenote: this is also the first release that we're doing from our open-source repository at GitHub, so if you'd like to contribute, be sure to fork our repository!
A basic list of changes can be found in the Changelog on our repository.
Check the download button at the top of this page!
Update: Precompiled server packages for Linux are available at https://linux.mtasa.com.
