Triangular tile map
https://weblogs.java.net/blog/malenkov/archive/2009/02/triangular_tile_1.html
Recall from the previous post there are only three regular polygons that can be used as tiles. Let's have a look at triangles now. Such tiles are practically not used in games because there is no direct path on the map and the game unit should be turned at each tile. Besides, it is rather hard to place units within acute corners because a lot of free space is wasted.

JetBrains has released IntelliJ IDEA 8.1.
https://www.cafeaulait.org/#February_12_2009_26199
JetBrains has released IntelliJ IDEA 8.1. New features include support for Git version control and the Oracle dialect of SQL. It's also supposed to be much faster. IDEA is $599 payware (up from $499). Upgrades from 7.x or earlier are $299. At my day job, I'm mostly using Eclipse 3.4 lately, though I do occasionally switch out to IDEA for very large refactorings across tens of thousands of classes that Eclipse can't handle and IDEA can (barely).

Testing JavaFX UIs - Part 2 of ?: Starting a JavaFX UI from a test written in Java
https://www.jroller.com/alexRuiz/entry/testing_javafx_uis_part_2
<p>
In order to perform functional testing of a JavaFX UI, we need first to start such UI from a test (written in Java) and then get a reference to the <code class="code">JFrame</code> hosting it. Once we overcome this challenge, we can start simulating user input on the UI under test. Once again, easier said than done...

Clearing the Java FX FUD

enthusiastic about JFX, but wandering forums and blogs over the net,
this doesn't seem to be the general impression - to date, most
community feedback (ignoring official advocates like Sun engineers) seems to be negative.

Sun has posted the public review draft of JSR-303 Bean Validation.
https://www.cafeaulait.org/#January_5_2009_66920
Sun has posted the public review draft of JSR-303 Bean Validation. This enables one to define constraints that can be applied to method arguments via annotations. However it's limited, and requires JavaBeans method-naming conventions to be followed. This would be better addressed by language-level support for preconditions and class invariants. Liek generics and the various closure proposals, it's a half-measure that's too crippled by backwards compatibility to really achieve its goals. Sometimes, when you can't do something the right way, it's better not to do it at all. Whether Bean Validation is one of those times, I'm not yet sure; but I'm beginning to suspect it is.

As a long time Windows user I still have some trouble finding my way around Mac OS X Leopard without resorting to the mouse all the time. I am a “keyboard person” and like to keep my hands right before me instead of constantly reaching for the mouse. When I started to use Mac OS I believed it would simply be a matter of practice and learning some new key combinations until I could work as <img src="https://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/DanielSchnellers2ndBlog/~4/502086754" height="1" width="1" />

JavaFX in Style
https://weblogs.java.net/blog/javakiddy/archive/2008/12/javafx_in_style.html
JavaFX aims to reduce the gap between coders and designers, to the extent that controls can be styled using CSS-like files. Examples are thin on the ground, however; so before the year ends (and on the assumption I'll be too hung over tomorrow to care/remember) here's a quick guide to creating your own styled controls.

This has certainly been a year that no one will forget. Between wars, global economic meltdown and an amazing election in America, all the stuff that goes on in the computer industry pales to insignificance - although the stuff we all build had a role to play. The internet has certainly changed the process of elections forever.

How to lay out FX nodes?
https://weblogs.java.net/blog/malenkov/archive/2008/12/how_to_lay_out.html
It is typical to use absolute coordinates to position nodes in a simple JavaFX application. But what if your application becomes more complex? It is quite annoying to change the coordinates of several nodes if one of them changes its size. From Swing and AWT you can recall the mechanism of Layout Managers. Does JavaFX suggest something similar?

How to compile on the fly?
https://weblogs.java.net/blog/malenkov/archive/2008/12/how_to_compile.html
A <code>PropertyEditor</code> interface provides support for GUIs to enable editing a property value of a given type. The interface supports a variety of ways to display and update property values. One of these ways is to employ the string representation of a Java code fragment that can be obtained by <code>getJavaInitializationString</code>, the method all standard property editors implement. To test this feature, one could generate a source code with a method that returns a required string, compile the code, run the class, and verify the value. This is quite easy to do with the Java 6 Compiler API.

Sun has released Java SE 6 Update 11.

Sun has released Java SE 6 Update 11. The main focus of this release is fixing bugs. My personal favorite is that certain malformed UTF-8 sequences are now rejected. Java's Unicode handling still isn't really correct, but at least now it's less dangerous.

How to skin a scrollbar

Should Java Assert that Network I/O Can't Occur on the UI Thread?
https://java.sys-con.com/node/763739
Doing network I/O on the user interface (UI) thread is bad. Most developers know that and can tell you why; unfortunately, it's still done. At this year's JavaOne, one of the keynote JavaFX demos bombed because the network was slow, something that would be forgivable had the entire application's UI not frozen, which required it to be restarted, only to trip up again a few minutes later.
A colleague of mine who was watching the demo suggested that the Java language should assert that network I/O cannot occur on the user interface thread. At first I thought this kind of extreme, but the more I thought about it the more sensible it seems...

Swing Sighting: RepRap - self replicating 3D printer
https://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/WebHome
From their website: RepRap is "a universal constructor, a machine that can replicate itself and - in addition - make other industrial products. Such a machine would have a number of interesting characteristics, such as being subject to Darwinian evolution, increasing in number exponentially, and being extremely low-cost." <p>
RepRap's GUI is a<a href="https://www.reprap.org/bin/view/Main/DriverSoftware#Overview">Swing app</a>. We're glad that Swing will be contributing to our future takeover by robot overlords.
