DarwinPorts Server Fund
By darwinports (add to contacts)
The DarwinPorts hardware is more than five years old and is desperately in need of an upgrade. Currently on FreeBSD, the goal is to finally host DarwinPorts with MacOSX on a real Xserve. Apple’s suggested minimal configuration is:
* 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processor
* 1600MHz frontside bus and 12MB L2 cache
* 2GB memory (800MHz DDR2 fully buffered DIMM ECC)
* 80GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
* Built-in graphics with 64MB RAM
* Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard
The cost for this server is $3000.

update on how funds are to be used
By darwinports
Posted: Wednesday, August 13, 2008
I’ve found a server (non-Mac) that can be used as a replacement/upgrade for the current server. It has twice the RAM and 3 times the hard drive space of the current server and costs $350. Now I have to figure out how to get the funds out of pledgie to pay for the new server…

Since darwinports.com is an attempt to make money by repackaging the macports.org project’s work, I just don’t see the point in making this donation.

Well, I don’t understand all the computer lingo so what rhwood said doesn’t make sense. I’d love it if someone could explain it to me?
Is this a hardware like hammer and nails store? Or hardware like CPUs thing?
I’m sorry I guess I just don’t understand it.

I’ve received no less than 4 emails from the address “”mailto:editor@darwinports.com">editor@darwinports.com" in the last 24 hours, asking me to come here and give them money.
Not only is there no “unsubscribe” mechanism, but when I replied and asked them to stop emailing me, the email to them bounced!
Something smells rotten here.

To address some of the concerns here: DarwinPorts is the original. It was started two years prior to MacPorts. While there is certainly a lot of shared code, there is a critical difference between the two: MacPorts is hosted by Apple. The important thing about DarwinPorts is that it is an independent effort that will survive even if Apple stops hosting MacPorts or were to elimitate all efforts by Apple employees for the ports system. The server is sorely needed.

I received yet another email from these people just this morning.
Do they think that continuing to spam me is going to make me want suddenly start donating money to them?

I think darwinports should address another concern, as Douglas Muth has pointed out: why do we keep getting daily spam?
I most certainly will NOT donate anything, and I regret even getting interested in DarwinPorts.
Provide an unsubscribe link and stop flooding people with e-mail.

The return path for the spam e-mails is mat@phpconsulting.com. I’ve e-mailed that address directly, I’ll see how that goes.

A note about the followup — Pledgie never handles anyone’s money, it goes straight to the PayPal account specified by the campaign creator. Check that PayPal account for the funds.
