The Mobile & Embedded Community Vision
Our charter is to become a thriving community that enables and empowers developers to collaborate and innovate, driving the evolution and adoption of the Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME Platform) for mobile and embedded devices. The Java ME platform is by far the most ubiquitous mobile device application platform today. It provides a robust, flexible environment for applications running on a broad range of other embedded devices such as TV set-top boxes, printers, telematics systems, and PDAs. The Java ME platform includes a flexible user interface, a robust security model, a broad range of built-in network protocols, and extensive support for networked and offline applications that can be downloaded dynamically.
The Java ME platform is deployed on billions of devices, supported by leading tool vendors, and used by companies worldwide. In short, it is the platform of choice for today's consumer and embedded devices.
Founding Principles
The Mobile & Embedded Community is founded on these four principles that are characteristic of open source development:
- Transparency
Projects are open to everyone who becomes a member of the community.
- Participation
People are enabled to work together to create and innovate for the betterment of the community.
- Compatibility
Promote existing standards, align with the Java Community Process program,
and preserve the Java technology specifications.
- Engineering Excellence
Define processes and guidelines that facilitate the creation of high quality,
deployable solutions.
These principles were chosen to enable the Mobile & Embedded Community to grow rapidly, develop high quality and innovative technology, and accelerate the development of next generation applications for mobile and other market segments.
Our Vision
Our vision for this community is to not only evolve and innovate within existing projects (such as the phoneME project), but also to expand our focus to all market segments that benefit from Java ME technology. We hope to see new projects in numerous areas such as Blu-ray, TV set-top boxes, printers, telematics, RFID, electronic book readers, personal digital media devices and intelligent toys. We also expect innovation within the community to push Java ME technology into new and emerging markets.
The ME Application Developers project has been created to provide useful and needed resources to Java ME technology developers. We want application developers to influence the direction of the Java ME platform in ways that support the future requirements of their applications. We seek broad participation of applications developers sharing their ideas and making significant contributions.
We hope that you join us in creating the most innovative and widely-deployed application platform on the planet. Get involved - share your ideas, ask questions, start a project. What are the future applications that you want to enable for mobile devices? To which devices would you like to port Java ME technology? Which new features would you like to add to the Java ME platform? Your active participation is key to the success of the Mobile & Embedded Community.
