This project is a place for developers to collaborate on
building, testing, and improving JDK and JRE installation bundles for a
variety of distributions based on the GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris open
source operating systems. Here you will find:
As you get involved and join us, we ask you to please remember these important points about jdk-distros and the JDK distributions effort:
- A forum for discussion of the practical and technical issues in creating compatible installation bundles as well as questions on the DLJ.
- Generic JDK download bundles ready for repackaging, and including the DLJ license and corresponding README files that describe required and optional files, as well as how to create a JRE bundle from a JDK bundle.
- A code repository under SVN.
- Sample packaging code, test cases, tools and scripts to get you started.
- Information on common problems, best practices, and useful solution ideas based on Sun's extensive experience in packaging the JDK.
- Reference documentation, including the DLJ, DLJ FAQ, Project FAQ, a Project README for how to get started, documentation for tools as they're developed and made available.
- A Wiki for capturing and documenting work done for specific distributions and their derivatives.
- Links to useful sites and resources.
- A who's who roster of project members.
As you get involved and join us, we ask you to please remember these important points about jdk-distros and the JDK distributions effort:
- Install bundles will be hosted and distributed by the operating system distributions, their mirror sites, and on media such as Live CDs, as well as possibly pre-installed on desktops and servers. The bundles themselves won't be hosted by this project, though sample bundles may be available here for testing purposes.
- Distributions exercising the DLJ and shipping JDK bundles are ultimately responsible for maintaining compatibility. The download bundles available here have been tested on specific reference OSs and have passed the Java SE 6 TCK and are known to be compatible on these OSs. However, when you drop these bundles onto various different distributions, there may be compatibility issues arising from the interaction of the JDK with the differing capabilities and implementations of the underlying OSs.
- The download bundles here, and repackaged bundles that are shipped with GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris distributions are not supported by Sun. Please check with the distributions to find out what options are available for support.
