Skyrock is the #1 radio station in France for the key under-25 age demographic — with over 4 million listeners tuning in each day. Its sister Skyrock Network is the leading European social network for under 25-year-olds through its Skyrock.com and Skyblog.com properties. With 5.2 billion pages viewed in April 2007, Skyrock Network affirms its positions as the #2 Internet group in France and #19 in the world.
Their 'Growing' Challenge
Launched in 2002, Skyblog has become the second most-visited site in France, behind only Google.fr, according to Alexa. More than 10 million blogs have already been created on Skyblog. The company needed a highly-scalable and highly-available infrastructure to keep pace with the rapidly increasing number of blogs, the addition of new web services, and the overall growing volume of data.
Their Scale-Out Solution
Working closely with the expert consultants of MySQL France, Skyrock chose to implement a modern 'Scale-Out' architecture for their systems infrastructure on cost-effective commodity hardware. Twenty replicated MySQL database servers currently contain 100 gigabytes of data each — and handle 11,000 queries per second.
According to Jerome Aguesse, Web Production Director at Skyrock, "MySQL is the best database for us. It is cost-effective, fast, robust, reliable, and requires very little administration. It's an extremely flexible and scalable product. Its replication features confer high scalability to our applications."
Skyrock continues to grow and is planning to launch an international blogging platform in the near future, which will be based on MySQL.
What is Database Scale-Out?
Scale-Out is a modern computing architecture that enables organizations to improve application performance and scalability on an incremental, as-needed basis by adding multiple replicated database servers on low-cost commodity hardware. This is in contrast to a Scale-Up approach, which requires organizations to make a large up-front investment in more expensive and complex server hardware and database licenses in order to add capacity.
In the online world, many of the largest and fastest-growing companies use MySQL to cost-effectively Scale-Out their successful businesses, saving millions of dollars over high-cost proprietary technology — including Google, Yahoo, craigslist, Ticketmaster, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Evite/Citysearch.
