Perl 5.10 ReleasedThe developers of the widely used programming language Perl are presenting their Christmas gift to the community. Five years after the last major version upgrade (Perl 5.8), Perl 5.10 is now available.
Among the interesting new features is the "smart match operator", whose semantics depends on the input parameters that it is presented with. Friday December 21, 2007 | permalink | comments (0) The Little Robotic Linux PenguinThink Geek has been offering a fun little device called the "Tux Droid Robot", that connects wirelessly to your PC and responds to various events happing on your computer, such as email alerts.
The robot has the shape of a little penguin that can blink or light-up its eyes, flap its wings, or talk. It can be programmed to respond in various ways to light, sound, or movements. Furthermore, the software is open source and can be customized using Python widgets.
Tux Droid Robot can also be used as remote control for your PC, and as wireless VOIP phone.

The machines now come with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). Additionally, the commercial software DVD player LinDVD has been pre-installed, since the lack a player for CSS encoded DVDs has been one of the main complaints about Dells Ubuntu computers.

More than 20,000 people responded this year, compared with fewer than 10,000 last year. The survey indicates that almost two-thirds of businesses now use Linux as client desktop for regular office workers, not just as development desktops for the geeks. Respondents also expressed high confidence for desktop Linux, with 76 percent believing that "Linux is absolutely ready for mission-critical applications". The top Linux distributions in businesses are the Ubuntu family, the Red Hat family, and the SUSE family. Ubuntu also continues to be number one for home users.

SplashTop is a Linux desktop environment that will be embedded in motherboards and enable users to check email, browse the internet, and perform other tasks just seconds after pushing the on button. The first motherboard that adopted Splashtop is the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe WiFi. Others are expected to follow soon.
