This is the root project for the OpenJDK Community.

To obtain this role, please go to Membership Request, review the JRL, and request the Researcher role.

Project Layout

Public projects include the new OpenJDK Project where JDK source is available under the GPL version 2 license. The JDK Collaboration Project is a private project where you can collaborate and contribute to sources which are not open sourced under GPL, and are available under the JRL license. We expect many of these JRL projects to be open sourced over time.

Project Licenses

JDK source code is available under two different licenses in the OpenJDK Community.

1. GPL v2 open source license
2. Sun's Java Research License

• Java HotSpot virtual machine
• Java programming language compiler (javac)

Other projects are also included in the OpenJDK community that do not include JDK source. These projects may use the JRL, GPL or other licenses.

Project Roles for (private) JRL Projects

• Researcher

  Researchers are developers who use the technologies in the OpenJDK community to create tools and other applications (such as benchmarks) or to work on the the API or other research projects under the JRL. Researchers don't contribute code, but they are using the APIs, identifying bugs and making suggestions. Researchers have the capability of looking at all projects in the OpenJDK community of projects. To request the Researcher role click here.

• Contributor

  A Contributor is a Researcher who has signed the Sun Contributor Agreement. In addition to the capabilities of the Researcher role, a Contributor also has the ability to submit fixes and enhancements to the JDK code in the jdk-collaboration project. You must first apply for the Researcher role before you can be granted a Contributor role.

How to Contribute

Each project in the OpenJDK Community defines how contributions should be made for that project. For example, contributions to the open source OpenJDK project are defined here and detailed information about contributing to the JRL-based JDK 7 project can be found here.

You can contribute to OpenJDK projects by providing feedback, filing bugs, and submitting fixes and enhancements.

Starting Your Own OpenJDK Project

Before joining or creating a project under the OpenJDK Community, please review our Governance Guidelines. These guidelines are intended to ensure that OpenJDK projects are run in a fair and open manner.

Projects that require a JRL will start in the jrl-incubator under the jdk-research project. These projects require that java.net members agree to the JRL terms and will be public only to those java.net members with a researcher or contributor role. JRL projects can take advantage of the researcher and contributor roles or can use the standard observer and developer roles that come standard with a java.net project.

Projects that do not require a JRL license will start off in the jdk-incubator and work their way into the main community once they are stable. Before starting your own project, be sure to check for existing similar projects in the incubator and in this projects area. A list of projects can be found below.
