Project history

The background to this project is that I wrote an eclipse RSS News aggregator plugin that leveraged the great work in the ROME project for the EclipseTrader project over on sourceforge. Due to how eclipse works I wanted to know if someone had or was going to host an Eclipse update-site for the ROME libraries, the dev list response indicates not.

By having a ROME update site, I could refer to it via the other project and keep updates close to the source, and more likely to be updated. Discussions on the dev group also made me think that I could quite probably break out the RSS plugin based on rome and equally host that here, meaning I only had to write an interface plugin for the EclipseTrader project.

There are two distinct areas, one is a web-site containing the eclipse update site, this is only a fistfull of XML files and the latest ROME libraries. The second is the Rome RSS aggregator plugin. Its use of Rome is pretty basic but can be extended. Additionally it provides a pluggable translation capability for newsfeeds - an imlpementation based on google is provided.

Project highlights

• ROME RSS libraries have one home where eclipse clients can load and keep up to date with ROME releases
• Clients can use/extend the RSSAggregator plugin and equally be kept up to date with it.
• The RSSAggregator plugin provides extension points for translation services of RSS feeds, and includes an example Google based translator.

Milestone 1

• Improve scratchy index page :) [in progress]
• To establish a ROME update site, complete with all licence details etc. [update site done, need licences...]
• Get the current RSSAggregator into CVS - it is currently tainted with EclipseTrader specific APIs [done]

Milestone 2

• Flush out EclipseTrader taints [done]
• Tidy and document
• Investigate non web-based (java library based) translator
• Further reiew ROME libraries, see what I can extend into the plugin

Milestone 3

• Hmmm. take on any other ROME related eclipse plugins

Releases

An update site has been created here {but why doesnt its index.html work?}. The update site contains the following features :-

• ROME libraries (includes core ROME libraries - 0.6)
• RSS Aggregator (Eclipse preference page using ROME libraries - 1.0)
• EclipseTrader News Provider (EclipseTrader plugin providing News retrieved via the Aggregator - 1.0)
