Welcome to the RSS Notifier project. It is a small application that works from the System Tray just like Gmail Notifier does. It reads a list of RSS/Atom Feeds and shows the news in small windows. It aims to give the user real time news, based on news published using RSS files. The application was designed to be loaded on window manager startup (Windows/KDE/Gnome/Xfce). It will look for a connection and will download all RSS feeds configured for it. When a new item is found it will show you a brief description. If you want more information about an item, right-click the tray icon and click the selected RSS item. Your default brower will open this item. RSS Notifier has i18n files implemented in properties file. There are versions in Chinese (traditional), English (USA), French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese (Brazil) for now. If your language isn't translated yet, please translate it and send it to us. It is a small file (30 statements)!

Install and Use

RSS Notifier requires Java 6 Runtime Environment installed on a System Tray supported platform. To install and use RSS Notifier you just download the most new stable version on Stable Releases folder, unzip, and create a link with the command:

  javaw.exe -jar *local to rssnotifier.jar*

Put this link at your initialization folder, at windows system bar.

Configuration

Right button click in RSSNotifier tray icon. A default menu will appear. Click in Configuration. The window above will appear. Now you just put the values what you want to receive news and press OK.

The first check box allow to choose what kind of notify window the user want. If selected, RSS Notifier will show a Microsoft Windows default message window, else RSS Notifier will show a self notify window, similar to GMail Notifier's.

The last configuration field is a list of RSS links, one entry per line. When OK button is pressed all rss feeds will be checked. If there are new items they will be showed to you.

If you would like to help to develop new versions of RSS Notifier or send bug fixes, search in our issues list, or talk with developers: dev@rssnotifier.dev.java.net. All developers and collaborators must be subscribed in this list.

To get and parse the RSS Feeds, RSS Notifier uses ROME and JDOM. All dependences are in downloaded zip file and in /lib directory in cvs.
