MagPlot
Last modified: 16 March 2005
Update
MagPlot has now reached Version 0.9.5. The next step will be a appropiate time scale and improvements on the GUI and Console functionality.Next Milestone:
- Appropiate time scale
- GUI and Console improvements
- New Combiners
-BarPlot
-ScatterPlot datapoints with error bars and mean/max/quartile extension...
the so-called box-whisker datapoints, but in elegant Tufte style.
and more information on the website.....
Mission Statement
Generate a platform-independent main program and toolbox for visual appealing 2D charts according to Edward Tufte's ideas.
Background
During a construction of another program chart routines were needed.
In this time JFreeChart was very incomplete so I decided to use
Ptplot. After a while I was frustated with the IMHO slow and cumbersome
procedural programming style of Ptplot (sorry, purely subjective) so after more
and more changes the program was literally rewritten from the scratch.
Seeing
the work of Edward Tufte: "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information" and
remembering the fine LaTeX output for all kind of text I considered that it is
probably possible to achieve a very good charting program.
Project Summary
- Fast drawing mode with lower resolution for high performance real-time display
- Slow drawing mode for high resolution, high quality printing, image output etc.
- Output of charts in EPS,PS, as BufferedImage and (planned) PNG,SVG etc.
- Linear, logarithmic and wrapped axes with auto scale.
- Scatter plot, Contour plot; (planned) BarPlot, PiePlot...
- Plots are fully configurable allowing all advantages of Java2D: Transparency, Scaling, Rotating, Clipping...
- Text console allowing full control for keyboard lovers (planned)
- Use console or pipe for in-/output (planned)
Participation
BEFORE YOU SEND ME SOMETHING PLEASE READ THIS:
Please do not send me
- own code that is poorly documented
- own code containing bugs even more nasty than those in Starship Troopers
- advise for features / programming without comprehensible reason
- request for help on other projects
Please *do* send me
- bug reports of *reproducible* bugs with your system and VM configuration.
The code development and release will remain mostly in my hands as long as possible.
So if you have wrote a debugged & documented component under the GPL
license you may send it to me, but it is possible that I do not
wish to integrate it in the MagPlot releases. If this is the case your rights
will remain untouched and I certainly do not intend to use your
work for present and future projects without your consent.
Please understand that I wish to spend my time programming, so
support is very limited while I build up this page.
Thanks
