“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the COURAGE TO START.” — John Bingham
I’m a 34 year old female newbie runner. Years ago, while cooling down after a game of soccer, I felt my chest tighten and my airways close. I was starting to wheeze, and within seconds, I couldn’t breathe. The episode lasted about 10 seconds, and I started to feel the air coming in again. That first attack led me straight to a pulmonologist that same week, where I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma. Before the incident, I’d always noticed that I had great difficulty jogging or running long distances. I always thought my endurance just sucked bigtime. It was more than that, it seemed. So then, I stuck to sports which only required short bursts of energy, like badminton (I stopped tennis, too, because I easily got tired attempting to cover the entire court) and a bit of sprinting, and shied away from endurance activities. I got stuck with walking. This April 19, 2009, I got invited to join the 5K event during the Greenfield run in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, just for fun since I just live in nearby Tagaytay. I was hesitant, I wanted to join the 2K, but I was told that was for kids 😛 So, with much anxiety, I tried my luck. I finished the 5K in 56.21 minutes with much, much difficulty…but for some reason, I was hooked 😀 Since then, I’ve been tracking my own course here in our subdivision (rolling hills and all), and monitoring my progress. Reason I’m doing this blog thing is to encourage other newbie runners and maybe get non-runners to start hitting the roads on foot (er…running shoes)…I mean, if I can do it (exercise-induced asthma, knee problems, not to mention advancing age), albeit slowly, I’m sure lesser injured people most definitely can, too!

I am so glad I landed here 🙂
I used to be your typical lampayatot. No exercise. Madaling mahilo.
But running has given me a high I can’t explain.
I never imagined nor believed that I could ever run 5K in 42min and I am raring to go for 35mins pa!
I hope to see you in the races to come!!! 🙂
hi, beabear! 🙂 thanks much for coming to visit 🙂 i’m still a very weak runner…and just recently, i was really in the pits about my running, but i’ve decided to hang on and cut myself some slack…make running a happy experience for me again 🙂 i hope to see you in future runs, too 😀 maybe we can run together 😛
YES! Let’s run together sometime 🙂
