Comment on authenticity by vmichael
https://vincemichael.wordpress.com/2008/11/20/authenticity/#comment-7546
Sun, 20 Aug 2017 20:18:14 +0000https://vincemichael.wordpress.com/?p=379#comment-7546With the exception of the final sentence, the commenter has made an excellent point. Building traditions are worthy of preservation and indeed in some of my later blogs about preservation at Pingyao where a traditional yaodong was rebuilt, I considered it authentic because the building tradition had survived even though the building was “new.” Unfortunately I have also witnessed new “Chinese” buildings being constructed with Western triangular truss frames and the use of shims to create the curving roof profile rather than traditional dougong.

Because building is not just about certain bricks, which anyway are being replaced when neccesary. The building firstly is idea, intention and design. If on the certain place were a temple and now it is rebuilt from scratch – it is not fake. It is the same building, just a new stage in it’s living history. Fake is when someone builds a Big Ban in Shanghai.
Even if something completely new is built, it is illogically to call it a “fake”. It is just a modern building, built in a traditional style. There is nothing scarry. Chinese are doing well, when they build new traditional buildings. If you don’t like it – it is not their problem. It is just your psychological difficulties.

Tue, 14 Feb 2017 16:26:07 +0000https://vincemichael.wordpress.com/?p=5483#comment-7113[…] This makes sense to me. In heritage conservation we spend way too much time painfully reverse engineering this. We have a building resource and we try to find the events and programming it needs. This is especially challenging when it comes to house museums, as I have written about many times before, here, here, and here. […]

For a biography of Lorraine Hansberry, would you please contact me? (cjs1994@earthlink.net)
I need to dig deep into Bronzeville, and perhaps you can recommend some sources I might overlook.
All the best,

Fri, 09 Dec 2016 16:30:15 +0000https://vincemichael.wordpress.com/?p=6388#comment-7088[…] This mix of civic-scaled spaces and programs helps differentiate the new school from the old Malcolm X College, which, Jankowski says ,“felt like a high school.” (Demolished for a Chicago Blackhawks hockey practice facility, the 1971 steel-framed school in the style of Mies van der Rohe would have been discarded without a second glance in just about any other city than architecture-loving Chicago.)
