I am a student hiding out in the not-so-dark underbelly of conservative Christianity. A little bit agnostic, some theist, probably some Christian, and nearly all confused. My interests are psychology, cognitive science, literature, philosophy, physics, ancient history and religion. While I despise braindead Christians (well, nearly all so-called conservative Christians), I have little to no respect (but a little interest) in the “New Atheism” movement.
I have debated publicly before, though I wish to remain anonymous, and have defended positions in print that I do not hold. This blog is where I get to let loose.
Hey RS, just stumbled uopn your blog. I am in a similar boat to yourself. I am something of an agnostic, panentheist, deist….
I have been flicking through some of your posts, and intend to give them a better read as time permits. But I like what I see. Just wanted to introduce myself here.
Stu
Thanks Stu. I actually lean towards a God existing, but I am working out too many things in my own thinking to say anything more than that.
Hope to see you around.
I still definitely lean that way myself. I have just, over the last few years become aware that I can’t be dogmatic, with myself or others, about the old certainties that I grew up with. Some doubt is good. But also doubt in one’s doubts!
Stu and religiouskeptic, I feel a kinship to you both. I cannot conceive of creation without a creator. That, in my mind, presupposes an external power greater than the creation itself. But, I also suspect that creation contains a spark of the creator and I believe it exists especially within each human I encounter. When I view creation, I find order. Therefore I infer the creator has created order within His creation and that he loves his creation. To live in harmony with the creator, I must also love His creation, especially the lives he has placed within my spheres of influence. These beliefs translate to: “love God and love others”, the same message Jesus gave to us. However, I differ with orthodox Christianity when it involves Theology ,dogma and tradition. Paul mentioned “freedom from the law”. My personal creed is “love and liberty”. We have liberty to live our life so long as it does not infringe on others. Unlimited, unbounded, unconditional love is the standard for our faith and practice. Within these limits we have complete liberty. This liberty is not defined by limits so long as unselfish love is our controlling standard.
I find Biblical in errancy unacceptable as a standard for our faith and actions. There are many factual contradictions and even more inconsistencies in the Bible. This precludes it for use it as my ultimate guide.
Are there churches that are compatible with my unorthodox beliefs? If so, please let me know.
