The UWI Climate Education, Justice and Literacy Hub
Advancing Climate Education in the Caribbean and Other Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Welcome to The University of the West Indies Climate Education, Justice and Literacy Hub. This online space allows users to learn more about the science of climate change, action for climate resilience and to collaborate with others on solutions.
The climate crisis affects every corner of the earth. In the Caribbean, more intense storms, coastal flooding, depleted coral reefs and marine degradation are becoming increasingly evident.

These shocks have resulted in devastating impacts for people, economies, livelihoods and the environment.
Without accurate information about climate change, its consequences will continue to escalate, impacting vulnerable communities and ecosystems. Insufficient climate change education hinders efforts to mitigate climate action, calls for climate justice and access to climate financing to fund critical actions.
The UWI and Climate Education
Climate change education is a priority for The UWI. It is the first educational institution in the Caribbean to develop an online hub. In 2019, the International Association of Universities selected The UWI to mobilise higher education and research institutions for sustainable development.
The Open Society Foundations (OSF) funded Climate Education, Justice and Literacy Hub - is a repository of information in support of Agenda 2030 with climate justice, climate literacy and education as the focus. This online hub is grounded in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - SDG 4 (Quality Education with a focus on youth engagement), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) will be at the forefront of our work.
Perspectives
-
“Every part of the planet and all human beings are affected by global greenhouse gas emissions, which are the highest they have ever been in human history. Small Island States are extremely vulnerable because their ecosystems are very fragile.”
Professor Michelle Mycoo
Professor of Urban & Regional Planning, The University of the West Indies. Professor Mycoo is a distinguished scholar and internationally recognised expert on climate change.

"It was only during the fourth assessment, (when we were) co-awarded the Nobel Prize, that was the first time it was taken on globally...The worry is once it's acknowledged now, so late in the game, that hopefully it’s not too late to turn it back because (climate change is happening) faster and faster.”
Professor John Agard
Professor of Tropical Island Ecology and Inaugural Executive Director, The UWI Global Institute for Climate Smart and Resilient Development.
Professor Agard is a recipient of The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, 2023.

“Education about the environment, including climate change, allows participants to understand why we need to change and do things differently, and ultimately empowers people to promote and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development.”
Dr. Emily G. Dick-Forde
FCPA, Deputy Campus Principal, The UWI Global Campus and serves on the Management Committee of The UWI Global Institute for Climate Smart and Resilient Development.
