BibTeX
The venerable BibTeX program sorts and writes a document's bibliography (.bbl) using style files (.bst) and formatting-independent (in principle) bibliography databases (.bib). It works with LaTeX, plain TeX, and other TeX variants. It was written by Oren Patashnik as part of the original Stanford TeX project, and is still maintained by him.
Sources
- BibTeX is currently distributed through TeX Live and other software collections. BibTeX is not distributed as a standalone program.
- The Subversion source repository for original BibTeX is contained within TeX Live, for the developers' convenience.
- BibTeX is compiled as part of Web2C in TeX Live (retrieve full TL sources).
Documentation and related
- The original BibTeX documentation (btxdoc for authors and btxhak for style writers) is available in TeX Live and elsewhere.
- Numerous other packages, programs and documents (see the bib* entries) relating to BibTeX and bibliographies in TeX have been released. A shorter selected list is also available.
- Many bibliography-related articles have been published in TUGboat, including several by Oren.
- Nelson Beebe's BibTeX Information and Tutorial web page has much information on using BibTeX. It is part of Nelson's monumental BibNet project, which provides bibliographies, many complete, for numerous journals and noted scientists, along with many BibTeX tools.
Mailing list, bug tracker
- Mailing list for bugs and discussion: biblio@tug.org (archive). When reporting bugs, please include input file(s) and all specified command line options, so the problem can be reproduced. This list can also be used for other TeX-related bibliography software, such as BibLaTeX.
- If you wish to submit a bug report or feature request for posterity, you can use the TeX Live bug tracker.
Happy BibTeXing.
