About me

A couple months over two years here, and we’re doing okay: the first article is published, the second and third are well underway, and I’m working on the first book. And continuing to find great pleasure in taking a half hour to reflect every night on whatever’s on my mind. To new visitors, welcome. To old friends, thanks for encouraging me, and sticking with me – you make it a fun adventure!

Well, now that the blog is a year old, I’m approaching the second anniversary of my graduation. I’m still enjoying my life enormously, still dancing and sewing and all of that – and I’m writing! Slowly, but moving. So let’s call year one here at TDP a success.

[April 2013]

***

I’m a one-year-out-of-grad-school professor at a fancy-pants university, which is everything I hoped it would be. (Thank god, too, because earning that PhD was no walk in the park.) I’m enjoying my new normal-person life enormously – dancing, sewing, hanging out with my cats, fish and husband (not necessarily in that order), reading, playing piano, and generally liking post-student life – but what I am *not* doing is writing as much as I should be. Or, like, at all. So this is a place for me to get back in the habit of writing, and maybe start to work on the ideas that might some day become articles and papers. Til then, I will write for a at least a half hour a day, every day, on anything at all, and we’ll see what comes of it.

  7. Hi there,
You have a very nice blog over here.
I really enjoy reading your posts.

I am currently studying literature as a Minor (Major in Art History).
    Keep up the great work.

    Greetings from Belgium
    Olivier.

  8. Hi there Trophos! Your link is now up on my home page. Scroll right down to Writers I Like ….let me know if you are happy with the bit of description I have copied and pasted.

  9. Found you today under “Freshly Pressed.” Wow. Just…wow. Recently started a PhD in English (VERY part-time due to teaching college full-time). Something radiated through your words today, and they really sang for me. Thank you.

  10. Very nice to find you from Freshly Pressed. I like what you write. I am also trying to write or edit something I have written for at least half an hour a day. I shall be following you. Feel free to drop by my Blog some time.

  11. Strangely late to the blogging party, yours is one of the first I came across, and I’ve truly found it to be a delight, and that truly horrible/lovely moment as a writer, when you find someone saying important things casually, with a grace that seems impossible. You’ve made my next entry take three times as long to write, but I believe (hope) it’ll be that much better for it. Thank you for affording me the opportunity to agonize.

    • Oh my goodness! I am honored that you found something graceful and worthwhile in my musings, although of course I hope they will inspire you to write more, rather than be anxious about your voice. Thank you for reading, and sharing your thoughts.

  12. Love your blog! You’ve been an inspiration. Don’t feel obligated to do anything, just keep up the terrific work! https://americantaitai.com/2012/09/30/inspiration/

  13. From a senior at the same smarty pants university, did I take your class?

  17. Not really sure how I found you , but I really enjoy reading your blog !! I am fairly new to blogging and having fun finding interesting blogs to read !! I am also working on getting in the habit of writing daily, not quite there yet, but I am trying !!

  18. Hello – since someone was nice enough to give me a Versatile Blogger Award (clearly someone who hasn’t met me), I feel duty bound to pass that on. Here’s the link, and if I’ve done this right it will explain everything in words which I have faithfully cut and pasted (thereby proving my versatility).
Whether or not you choose to follow this up (and it’s taken me, as a rookie, ages to do it) I do mean it, as I enjoy your blog very much.

  24. It’s a joy to see your world through your lens and beautiful words.

    • I don’t know how I missed this all summer, except that I think we were in Ukraine when you added the comment — thank you!!! This is fascinating! I’m a little obsessed with pointe shoes, and I especially loved connecting the faces to the different symbols. Thank you 🙂

  26. Hi trophos, nice to meet you! Love your blog, love your writing style. It’s infectious. In a good way 🙂

  28. Hi – thanks for following my blog! Sounds as if we are on similar journeys. Well, kinda. I am 58 and just graduating with a masters in writing that I hope to use to teach college writing. It’s heartening to hear that being a prof is all you had hoped. I’m very nervous about it! One more semester till I graduate and begin my second career!
    Good to “meet” you.

  29. Well….checking you out….” I will write for a at least a half hour a day, every day, on anything at all, and we’ll see what comes of it.” Have you kept up? Love the fish tank photo on your latest post, by the way. A lovely, green, clear contrast to the murk of January here in the West of Scotland.

  30. Thank you so much for the “Follow” on The Last Half! I have done nothing but read your posts for the last couple of hours, but I refuse to Follow you back, because then I will never get a thing done. Every post made me think too much, and follow links, and then think about those posts, and follow THEIR links. (I thoroughly enjoyed the last two hours. Too much.)

So, I have bookmarked, and will return for a visit. And probably then weeaken, and Follow you : )

    • That’s fair play then – I got lost in a rabbit hole of enjoying your posts yesterday 🙂 I look forward to seeing you again, and to keeping track of what you’re up to!

  31. Funny enough, although I read constantly, I have never had much interest in classic literature. And, I’ve never had much interest in cats (I’m a dog person myself). Yet, I continually find myself drawn to your posts. I look forward to each post with anticipation and am always satisfied with my nightly read. Thanks for sharing your skillful writing with the world.

    • What a kind and flattering thing to say! I am very happy that I have turned you on, however mildly, to classics and cats 😉 In all seriousness, it is delightful and humbling to hear such things. Thanks for telling me, and I hope I can continue to be a pleasing part of your nightly routine.
