Sing/play You Light Up My Life at someone’s wedding during the lighting of the unity candle (this weekend).
Hold me.
Wedding Part Two recap:
J and I woke up at 4:00 am on Saturday to head to Lori’s house where the rest of my family and Crystal were meeting.
We got to the airport and sadly watched the luggage packed with fondant veggies for the top of Julie’s cake get thrown in with the rest of the checked luggage. (I called on Friday to see if we would be able to put the fondant veggies in a carry-on bag, and the guy said that the fondant too closely resembled the consistency of playdough and would definitely not be allowed.)
The flights were fairly uneventful, except for a little extra turbulence when we were approaching Cleveland. Obtaining the rental car, however, was not a quick process. We had to wait quite a while for David’s car, which turned out to be this electric blue beauty:
We got two rental cars and David was the leader for the trip. It’s a good thing he drove a bright blue car because he definitely made some sudden turns and stops. At one point the interstate split in two and we saw the blue car cross four lanes to veer left rather than right. Yikes.
We went straight to Julie and Tommy’s house from the airport since no one but J and I had gotten a chance to see it. It was getting close to 3:00 and none of us had had much to eat all day, so you can imagine that we were all pretty grumpy. We took a quick tour of their place and then asked for lunch recommendations. Julie recommended a Chipotle close to their house. Mimsies has talked about Chipotle several times on her blog, so I was glad to finally try it!
If you haven’t been and plan to go in the future, keep in mind they aren’t kidding when they say the hot salsa is hot. Holy cow. It was really good, though. We were all satisfied and instantly became much happier people.
Our next mission was to get to the reception site to open the fondant veggie bag to see if any of the veggies survived the trip. Here’s Lori unzipping the insulated carrier:
We had four glass Pyrex dishes and several other Tupperware dishes packed with fondant veggies and lots of bubble wrap.
I knew everything was going to be okay when I unwrapped this chicken:
It survived! And you could still see the indentions for the wings!! (My co-worker made this adorable chicken. I mentioned that Lori and I were working on the vegetables for Julie’s garden cake, and she asked if she could come help! She came at lunch on Friday and after work until almost 9:00 p.m.! I couldn’t believe it. Another of my co-workers came at lunch on Thursday AND Friday, and Crystal helped on Thursday. It turned out to be a lot of fun.)
I took great care when packing the tomatoes because they were my favorite of all of the vegetables. I loved the tiny, delicate leaves.
They probably fared best of all the vegetables, but we were running out of time on Friday night and didn’t have time to make grids like that for each container.
It took me a long time to figure out why my mom had scissors in her hand for this picture, but I realized she was still unpacking the vegetables and was cutting the tape wrapped around the carrot.
We wrapped each individual carrot in a combination of parchment paper and wax paper and rolled it up and taped it. It was a tedious process, but we felt it was necessary if we wanted the vegetables to look semi-presentable after traveling many miles underneath an airplane.
Some of the vegetables melted a little, but we were able to form them back into shape and ended up with a really cute cake. I was so happy everyone pitched in to help – Lori and I would have never been able to assemble it in time by ourselves!!
Lori originally wanted to create two scarecrows wearing a wedding dress and a tuxedo, but we decided that there wasn’t enough time for that and turned the chickens into the bride and groom. I loved the veil. :)
They are sitting on top of the scraps from the sugar snap peas we had at dinner. While we were unpacking the cake supplies, Crystal noticed a guy snapping peas in the corner. She asked if we could use those on the cake, and he didn’t mind at all! I thought it made a perfect foundation for the chickens (as long as people realized it wasn’t necessarily edible!)
Remember me telling you about the Tide-To-Go pen used to get chocolate off of Julie’s dress at the Batesville wedding? Well, here’s Carey using it on the tablecloth for the very same thing. We got chocolate everywhere when we were assembling the cake in such a hurry.
It didn’t all come out, so one of the caterers grabbed an extra tablecloth. We were so glad he had a spare.
The table decorations at the reception coordinated with everything in Batesville the weekend before, but with just a slightly different twist. The cauliflower arrangement was my favorite:
Everything was beautiful.
Julie asked my dad to say the blessing before dinner. He obliged, but not without making a few comments beforehand. He congratulated Ohio on their good sports teams and said how much he appreciated everyone coming out and supporting Tommy and Julie, and then said something along the lines of “I know you’ve probably noticed that my family and I talk kind of funny with an accent, but guess what, it’s mutual.” What??!! It came out of nowhere. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t see many people at the other tables laughing, so I hope they weren’t too offended. I personally thought it was hilarious because my dad is capable of saying anything when he gets nervous.
I thought my parents looked really nice all spiffed up at the dinner.
It’s amazing we even made it there at all. We finished with the cake just minutes before the reception was supposed to start, and we hadn’t even checked in at the hotel yet! We were only an hour late, which is pretty remarkable.
We barely beat Julie and Tommy there! Here’s the happy couple enjoying their big night:
I love this picture of Troy helping Julie with her corsage.
It’s hard to have a bad time whenever you’re around Troy – He’s literally the life of the party and I love him so much.
It was a wonderful evening filled with good food, dancing, and cotton candy.
What more could a girl ask?
My mom, who was constantly fretting about Julie’s “wedding in the pasture,” certainly had to eat her words after the wedding this weekend. It was by far the most beautiful wedding I’ve ever attended. I loved my wedding and wouldn’t change a thing, but Julie definitely created a wedding no one will ever forget. The bouquets of vegetables were absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking. It was so wonderful to break down everything after the wedding was over and have a HUGE pile of veggies to distribute to everyone in the family.
Now, for the good stuff – PICTURES! I loved the photographer for the wedding. She was very cool and even offered to share her handkerchief so we could wipe off sweat from our brows before the posed pictures. I’ll link to her website once I figure out what it is. I believe some of these pictures also came from either Ann or Maria, Tommy’s wonderful sisters. I haven’t even downloaded the pictures from my camera yet.
Here’s the orchard Saturday morning at the rehearsal:
One of the arrangements along the aisle of chairs:
Me dousing Julie with bug spray before the pictures – It was necessary! There were ants, ticks, spiders, galore!
This picture represents my favorite story to tell about the wedding.
We took pictures around 4:00, so the lettuces in our bouquets started wilting after about an hour or so. Tresa, the wedding coordinator, instructed me to take the bouquets inside where it was cool. Rebekah and I decided to put the bouquets in the refrigerator so they would be extra cool. Well, there was apparently some loose chocolate on a dessert in the refrigerator and some of the chocolate got on Julie’s bouquet unbeknownst to all of us. Just as it was about time for us to line up, Julie discovered chocolate on the left boob area of her wedding dress!! I couldn’t decide which was more unbelievable – the fact that we discovered it just minutes before the ceremony or that Julie was so incredibly calm about it all. She was even eating the remains of the chocolate on her bouquet. This sweet lady was standing near us when we discovered it. She exclaimed, “Oh! I have a Tide-To-Go pen in my car!” She had to go get her keys from her husband and proudly ran over with her Tide pen. She hesitated for a second because it was awkward to start rubbing the pen on Julie’s boob, but I told her to go for it. A few seconds later, Julie said, “Um, what’s your name? I feel like I should probably know your name for when I tell this story later.” It was hilarious. We didn’t know the lady. I thought she was one of the wedding coordinator’s helpers, but it turns out she was the wife of one of the band members. She was so nice and helpful. Her friend (another wife of a band member) took Julie’s ring to the best man because I didn’t have time to rush it over to him before it was time for him to walk down the aisle. We would have never made it without our musician wife friends!!
I love this shot of my dad walking Julie down the aisle.
Dad worked many hours getting the orchard ready because he knew how much it would mean to Julie. My dad has sacrificed his time for us our entire lives and it doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.
The wedding party (me, Julie, my cousin Peter who did a fabulous job officiating the wedding, Tommy, and Tommy’s brother Steve):
My nephews Charlie and Zach read an excerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit with some assistance from their dad (my brother Chuck).
It was by far the most touching part of the ceremony. I thought I might just die from the cuteness. Charlie’s reading voice matched Linus’ voice when he explained what Christmas was all about on A Charlie Brown Christmas. Zach said the word shabby with such exuberance! It was priceless and I’ll never forget it. They did a wonderful job.
Here are the pretty program and info cards Tommy’s sister Ann designed – I loved them:
The guest book was really cool. They set up a clothesline of sorts and had guests clothespin their wishes on it – I’m guessing from the picture that Julie was pretty happy about it.
The five McClain siblings:
You’ll notice David is smiling biggest. Every time I’m in a picture with my siblings, I’m always standing by David. Always. This is fine, except that he always tries to goose me. This time he didn’t actually do it but got tickled just thinking about it.
My sweet J hugging Julie – I love this picture.
I also love this picture of Julie and Tommy on the way to the reception – So cute!
This is my all-time, favorite picture of Julie EVER.
She couldn’t appear to be any happier. This makes my heart glad. It was such an honor to stand beside her Saturday and witness this glorious event.
Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Marth. I love you both!
J and I wanted to escape for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary, but we really didn’t have time to go somewhere far away since I had to be back to play piano for church Sunday morning. We decided to ask Carey if anyone was using her parents’ lake house in Hot Springs the weekend of our anniversary. Carey’s mom happened to be with her when I called her, so she asked her right then and she said we could use it! We were so excited and appreciative. The lake house is so calm and relaxing. I love being there because it’s so quiet and peaceful.
We were greeted with this on the counter when we arrived, which was SO nice and thoughtful:
Not only are they letting us stay at their lake house, but they left us a cute surprise! So fun. I couldn’t believe they remembered that J taped the engagement ring to a bag of Whoppers!
These are the views from the deck.
It’s absolutely gorgeous.
We didn’t plan anything for the weekend because we wanted it to be laid back, but we did remember to bring the top layer of our wedding cake with us. J was amazed by how much saran wrap was on it, but he finally got to the end of it!
I thought it held up pretty well considering it’s been in the freezer a year.
Wendy did a superb job of wrapping it because it was really delicious and fresh-tasting! We cut our pieces out of the middle and you really couldn’t tell it was a year old.
Typical picture for J – I love it.
Embarrassingly enough, I have to admit that I saw this face on the television pretty much the entire day on Saturday:
When J went to Sonic to get breakfast for us, I found an America’s Next Top Model marathon on VH-1. (For you ANTM fans, it was the season when Yoanna won. I have a lot of catching up to do!) I was instantly hooked and watched every episode of the season, including the one where they give you updates on all of the models. J didn’t seem to be too annoyed, which is another reason why I know I married the right person. He read two library books while I watched TV. I wasn’t a total loser in case you’re wondering – I did do three loads of laundry. I wasn’t going to do laundry because I felt badly to use someone else’s water/electricity, but Carey said that was ridiculous and I should just do some loads since our washing machine has been broken for so long. (Still not fixed – we’re waiting to hear if they’ll attempt to repair ours again or give us a brand new one.)
We went back home late Saturday night so I’d have time to practice a little before Sunday morning. We made the pancakes and fried apples Sunday morning and it was delicious! Thanks, Carey and Mary!!
J was really proud of the way his plate looked, so he took a picture. :)
Stacy called me last night to let me know Julie’s bridal portrait proofs were up on her website. I asked permission to link them on my blog – Julie and Stacy both said yes, so here you go!

When I looked at the pictures last night, there was only one picture of Julie showing her teeth while smiling. I requested more and Stacy added some for me. My favorite is 103 (teeth), but I also really like 278 (no teeth).
#103:
Doesn’t she look beautiful?
I can’t believe June is almost here!
This is the dress I’ll be wearing in Julie’s wedding. I hesitated to post this picture because the dress will obviously look very different on me since I’m not a size 2, but I think the color is very pretty.
I’m glad I ordered it yesterday – She said it will probably be here in the middle of May, and the wedding is June 9! Yikes!
(Batesvillians, doesn’t the model look a little like Melanyann? I had to do a double-take to make sure it wasn’t her.)
