Then and Now

In the spirit of all things ‘change’ I wanted to recreate one of my childhood drawings. I soon hit a bump in the road when I realized I never kept any of them. My mother, on the other hand, saved this one drawing I did for her of Ganesha (deity of intellect and wisdom).

Facing the ‘change’

It might just be me, but that song always reminds me of September- the month of change. Literally we associate September with a changing of seasons; as summer draws to a close and autumn begins. And even though I’ve left full time education, September still gives me that ‘back to school’ feeling. September often marks some of the greatest changes in our lives; whether that is our first day of school, a new school year, starting at college or beginning university. Personally, the prospect of change has sometimes made me frightened and at other times excited- normally a bit of both.

So when Sumi suggested ‘change’ as the theme for the next issue of Torn (out in September), it all seemed to fit so perfectly. When I pitched it to the others, they were equally keen! So I hope the theme of ‘change’ gets you just as enthusiastic and inspired. I’m looking forward to some creative submissions and as usual I’m hoping we have a great mix of different types of art, articles and reviews.

So what does change mean to you? At the moment I’m sure school and the weather are the two things in the front of your mind but you can respond to the theme of ‘change’ in so many ways – our emotions, bodies, lives, popular trends, environment and even objects go through states of change because in life almost nothing stays the same. That’s why I think this theme will really bring out some great ideas and pieces of art. Bored? Uncover Some Art!

We at Torn are excited to tell you about a unique opportunity to see an exhibition of new talented artists from the north! Graphic designers, photographers, illustrators and many more artists are showcasing their art for one day only in Leeds.

Northern Arts Uncovered: An Exhibition of Emerging Talent

Saturday the 21st April at Leeds Gallery, Munro House, York Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS9 8AG

Tickets are a steal at £5 and proceeds go towards supporting a UK arts charity. So support art, new emerging artists and the north by going to the Northern Arts Uncovered Exhibition. If all that doesn’t sway you, there is a free drink on offer too!

Northern Arts Uncovered is a brand new one day art exhibition in Leeds and an excellent opportunity to see fresh talent in the UK art industry.

The exhibition was started by Helen Brady, a Leeds University graduate and is joined by producer and designer Victoria Rosso who studied at Leeds College of Art, and who also holds a number of creative industry events in the north.

Our carefully chosen artists come from all around England (and some international), primarily the North, and each have a unique design aesthetic. This is the place to be if you want to discover exciting and original artists.

This exhibition serves as an affordable outlet for up and coming artists to display their work and gain recognition in all fields including graphic design, fine art, photography, illustration, mixed media and more.

This event is a must see for art lovers and producers alike to immerse themselves within the prolific arts scene that exists within Leeds. The show aims to attract a diverse range of both professional and student artists.

This is a non profit event. Funding from this exhibition goes to https://www.artfund.org – a charity dedicated to helping the UK arts industry.
