Hrmm, it occurred to me the other day that I've still got a livejournal. Not that I've really got anything to say. Uni's still a drag, I need to figure out what I'll do when I finish. I've really lost interest in IT, which kind of brings me back to square one - what do I want to do with my life?. Currently trying to figure out careers which will somehow incorporate my degree, without spending all day fiddling with computers. Been DJing at a few more events, it's all going pretty well. Next is "Mechanikal Fusion" at the Big Apple on the 23rd. On the downside, one of my decks broke last week, so I can't practise any more. Should be getting a second hand pair of Technics 1200mk2's next week. I've actually made quite a lot of new friends through the whole music/rave thing, which is really cool. It already feels like I've got a lot more in common with them than I do with the friends I've known for quite a while. That is all. | | Thursday, April 29th, 2004 | | 11:27 am |

They Came From Mars!
Whoa, haven't updated this in a while, hello everyone :o) Got some great news this evening, Damien(Freestyle) from XSProductions called me up and asked me to play in the 'Up and Comers' arena at next month's "They Came From Mars 2". It's a pretty sweet chance to play in front of hundereds of people and get noticed by people that matter. They haven't given me all details yet but it'll be on the 8th of May with headliners Kevin Energy, Sharkey and Mark Ashley over from the UK. The first two are some of my all time favourite DJs and if I wasn't playing at this, I'd be buying tickets just to catch their sets. I'll tell you more details when I get them, if your interested in coming along email me and I might be able to sort out some cheaper tix.
I've actually been devoting a lot of time and money towards music recently. I'm slowly working and saving to build up a studio and start making music of my own. Got a pair of Behringer B2031 'Truth' monitor speakers on order, which, for $680(ouch), are considered the 'budget' option. Next, I really need a beefy PC or a nice synth(even more money ....).
Other than that, I'm working for 'Bell's Kitchen' now as a delivery driver. This has gotta be one of the cushiest jobs I've ever had and I'm working with Kail, Matty, Davin and Eddy. My sister's just started working there as a kitchenhand as well, so now there're 3 sets of siblings in the kitchen. Transpac(the job packing up people houses) is going pretty well also. I'm prety much the main person there now, working every job and overseeing most of them, I've also brought Kail in as well (I'm Kail's boss :oP ).
Uni's still there, still crap and boring. Just finished reading Bladerunner today, was pretty disappointed. The book had a lot more to it than the movie, but it didn't really go anywhere. I was expecting some great revelation or comment on human/android nature or something. Oh well... | | Friday, February 13th, 2004 | | 3:35 am |

hrmm, long time since the last update, I stopped for a while cos they seemed to be getting uninteresting. So, updates: - One exam left tomorrow, skipped my neural nets exam today because I had no chance of passing the unit. -I have a full time job now working for allphones in Karrinyup. Brenda called me up out of the blue and said there was a job going if I wanted it. I actually quite enjoy the work and the people there are pretty cool as well. -Been going out with Lauren for a few weeks now. -Been buying too many records. Apart from uni sucking, things are pretty good. I think this is the first job I've had that I've actually enjoyed, or, maybe just not hated. The pay's crap, but this close to summer I don't really have much choice, and the long hours make up for it. Every day I get closer and closer to buying a new mobile, I know I need one, I just hope I don't over do it. Nearly bought and ericsson T610 on a 2 yr $55/month contract before I came to my senses. True, its a bloody sweet phone but for the same price I could get a non-camera phone AND an actual digital camera. That and, while bluetooth is really cool, the probability of me ever owning bluetooth device is pretty minimal. I want a java phone so I can write software for it, I reckon it'd be easy enough to knock up a public-key sms encryption program. Oh, the endless possibilities... The Rise called me up the other day as well. They're having another DJ comp jan/feb and asked me to send in another demo. Can't hurt... Been buying a fair few records with my new surplus income, got some classic happy hardcore on sale. I've also put together another 12+ record order tonight, lotsa fresh summer tunes. Bought Massive Attack 'Blue Lines' and 'Protection' LPs at 78s as well, quite funky, I need more trip-hop. They also sound pretty cool sped up and overlaid onto something with a bit more of a beat. That's all I can think of for now. Ooh, my sisters going on leavers for a week starting tomorrow :o) Get the house to myself again | | Sunday, October 19th, 2003 | | 5:13 am |
Drunken posts! :o)
Have spent the last week implementing the marching cubes algorithm. It's been the most time/effort I've spent on a single program ever, which was quite unexpected. Took tonight off to drink unhealthy amounts of goon and run rampant through the surrounding suburbs. Somehow, Kail cut his hand open on the roof of the Carine swamp power station, which bled all over me and him. I still maintain he owes me a carton of beer for convincing him not to wash it in the fetid swamp water. In ~one month I'll be free of projects and exams. I'm really looking forward to these coming holidays. Life seems to be getting better and better, which I really didn't expect as I get older and older (ok, I'm still a young'un). I think this summer's going to be one to remember. Kail and I have organised a mass toga crew for Lisa's halloween party. Should be fun. Hopefully we'll be in a state to go to 'Road Kill' the night after. that is allb | | Monday, October 6th, 2003 | | 4:36 pm |
mix!
Been a while since updating. Holidays were awesome, especially last friday. hrmm, can't really be bothered filling in the last 3-4 weeks. here's a small mix I did the other day, I've given it to a few promoters so here's hoping. It's 43mg, so if your on dialup, you prolly shouldn't bother. | | Tuesday, September 9th, 2003 | | 10:55 pm |
mmmmm, bought 24 records over the last week, which has nearly doubled the size of my collection. In retrospect, that's a little excessive. Well worth it though :o) For anyone who cares, here's a ( list:Collapse )Gonna piece together a kick-ass demo soon, even been playing with a little scratching :oP Maybe I'll buy some scratch records soon. Sold my Xbox for $250, spent all the money the day before I got it :o). Looking forward to holidays, considering trying to organise a camping trip/ holiday somewhere. I'm going to try and go to more of the small weekly/monthly nights around the place. Maybe get into a more diverse range of music like DnB, electro and trance. All boils down to money in the end though... Had a pretty big weekend. went to bed 5:30am Saturday and 7:30am Sunday. Found record amounts of 'floor-money' on friday night :oP. Clare and Chris's wedding was nice, I really wasn't feeling 100% after the weekend though. Will burn ridiculous amounts of online comics to cd tomorrow...... (thx trs80) | | Saturday, August 30th, 2003 | | 1:16 am |
So, I've decided I need vinyl money so I'm selling off my possesions :o) FOR SALE: XBox + DVD kit. Good condition, hardly used, with original boxes. $270ono Also Headphones. Sennheiser HD433. Fairly new, good condition. Good for music and gaming and such - $50. (They retail ~$75, have a google if you want to check them out) or $300 the lot :o) Edit: Xbox includes 1 game (Halo) and 1 controller. ( been quite a week...Collapse ) | | Thursday, August 14th, 2003 | | 9:52 pm |
I'm buying an awful lot of clothing recently (only happens once every couple of years). So far 4 short tees, 2 long tees, jumper/jackety type thing and pair of pretty cool pants. Quite happy with everything so far, lotsa cool shit to go out in now. Finally got my first Transpac job. Its fairly easy and I've got a nice boss (so far...). Doing a lot of work for family as well. Sounds like I should have a lot of money except that I've got a *HUGE* one next weekend and I've lay-byed some ridiculously expensive headphones (Technics DJM1200 @ $240 a pair!). What's even more ridiculous is that after using my $75 pair for a while, I understand why DJ's actually need these headphones (ever been in a LOUD nightclub? you have to hear your headphones over that...). Got my gig next friday but, even better, have rallied the troops to go to Dekwrekka IV the night after. Should be one mental weekend (and Kail's parents are away for a couple of weeks == Sunday chillout session :o). Uni's starting to get a little more demanding but I think I'll just continue ignoring it until I can be bothered :oP timtom, Over and out. | | Monday, August 4th, 2003 | | 3:56 pm |
So, changed my alarm time but for got to turn it on. Woke up quite refreshed at 11am, having missed 2 classes and making the other 1 not worth going to. Oh well. Weekend was quite good, had Lisa's (Kail's GF) house warming on Saturday, bloody classic. Highlights include: A very drunk Jo trying to get rid of the police, jibberish freestyle Mc'ing competition, me completely stacking it on the hammock, Clinch being put in a headlock by one of the neighbours (yes, this is related to the first thing), psytrance in Lisa's bedroom and more (it'll come back to me). So much for designated driver. After thinking 150 was excessive, I've only got 40ish passes left for the Rise thing (no, I'm not expecting 220 people to show up). Still, ask me for one if you're interested in checking it out. | | Tuesday, July 29th, 2003 | | 12:21 am |
stuff
I appear to be updating this journal fortnightly so here's the obligatory post. Holidays were okay, realatively uneventful. Ended up missing out on 'Breeze and Styles' and spent the money on bungee jumping instead. Was very cool, I thoroughly recommend it. Uni's been quite good so far, I really like Professional Computing and Neural Nets. Computer Security is ok, unfortunately Visualisation is approaching unbearable. It doesn't look like there's a lot of substance to the unit and the lecturer is really crap(also happens to be the one that screwed us last semester). I mean, seriously, I can read the lecture notes myself and I wouldn't struggle with the big words either. Anyway, I should get through, the project should be ok. I finally got a package from the rise today, I was beginning to worry when I hadn't even received a letter by this stage (and they've already had two heats). Details are: 'from Bedroom to Bigroom2' DJ competition - Heat 5 Friday August 22nd. DJ James Tannenbaum vs. DJ Zeal vs. DJ Nathan Griffiths Doors open 9.00pm, DJ battle commences 9:30pm They gave me free passes for 300 people, which I though was a little excessive. Still, If your interested, ask me for a few. I doubt they'll actually be charging entry anyway, but they make nice souvenirs. Its been a good start to semester, uni's good and I've got lotsa cool stuff coming up, lets hope the trend continues.... | | Tuesday, July 15th, 2003 | | 1:05 pm |
I'll keep it brief
Have been house-sitting Lauren's house for nearly a week. Didn't have any parties but its been a nice break from everything. Got too drunk wed, thurs and fri :o). Actually got a call from Transpac asking if I could work last friday, I said no, but at least this means they haven't forgot about me (or, worse, checked my references :oP ). One of the guys in Heat 5 of the Rise comp couldn't make it so I swapped with him, I'm now playing on August the 22nd (still a Friday). Been getting some kick-ass records (and even more in the mail!). I was wondering the other night how many professional DJ's break even after buying all the equipment and music. I think its alot less than you'd think. Anyhoo. | | Tuesday, July 8th, 2003 | | 1:58 pm |
DJ Zeal rockin' da house
hrmm, I wrote a rather largish entry last night, which I just found out I forgot to post. To summarise: Nadia's party was pretty cool and I DJ'ed for the first time in front of people, which was also cool. I've been working alot for Anglicare cleaning up trashed rental properties, which is not so cool, but I get cash, which is cool. In other news, I got a call from The Rise this morning. Its seems that my assumption that they'd thrown my demo in the bin was wrong and they want me to play in Heat 4 of the 'Bedroom to Bigroom' DJ comp! I'll be doing a half-hour set on Friday the 8th of August. Be there, or I'll never talk to you again. More details when I have them. Oh, and the winner of the Freddo frog is me. I've decided to go with Zeal as my DJ name (I'll call my groupies Zealots :o). I might be having a get together this weekend so email me if you want details. Posting cos I'm bored.
Suppose I don't really have much to say. Exams are over, I think I did dismally this semester but I'm quickly reaching the point where I don't care about uni any more. Lots of good parties coming up, annoyingly on the same nights (I think). Kail's + chupachup this saturday and Nadia's + Jodie's next week (Lauren, they are on the same day right?). I really wanna go to both the last two, but I don't wanna do a half-assed "nah mate, I'm skipper tonight" job of them. hrmm..... I think I'm addicted to vinyl. I bought six records this week and that was only cos they didn't have the ones I want. They've got these little systems to get you hooked, like at The DJ Factory, every tenth record's free, or at DJFunktions, where after 10 records you get 5% off any future purchase (10% after 20). Its actually kinda fun collecting records, you meet lots of people and get to listen to lots of music. I bought some early 90's techno second-hand yesterday, man they must've had some crazy parties back then. Not healthy for the bank balance though. Still, I guess its healthier than crack, or ZAngband. DJing thing going really well, I'm just about getting to the stage where I can do a set. The Rise is putting on an amateur DJ comp in the next couple of months, problem is applications have to be in before midnight tommorrow. I'm gonna try and put together a demo tommorrow and hand it in. I don't really have enough floor-filling material to do the full half-hour so there's gonna have to be some filler in there. Either way, good fun and good practise. Might go to STV tommorrow night, might not. Have fun everyone who's finished exams and sympathies to those who haven't. (and Happy Birthday for yesterday nadia) | | Saturday, June 14th, 2003 | | 9:03 pm |
So yeh, picked up all my gear today, looks pretty flash all set up (and smells new). Spent over six hours playing with it today, which is alot considering I only have three records. Beat-mixing is a little harder than I thought it would be, I'm coming along though. I think my choice of records wasn't the best for absolute beginnings - they're all songs I like and they gel together well enough, they're just a little complex . I might see if I can buy some shitty trance next week, I'm also gonna try n get my hands on a metronome. Other than that, exams and such. Looks like I'm going to fail Algorithms due to getting 2.6/25 for the project. It seems multiple parts of it have gone missing (ie 2/3 of it) and the lecturer doesn't really care.("The report was handed in" "Well, I didn't get it") She also informs that the portion that I wrote didn't even run, and hence received no marks, which is kind of odd because I've got a running (and correct) copy of it. Of course, I can't verify her claim because csmarks can't handle group projects (only one group member submits the code, other members have no idea what is actually submitted on their behalf). Oh well, I can still try for 80% in the exam, which is entirely plausible considering I knew just about everything covered by the course in January. Eh. *light bulb* Our project had files of the same name with different capitalization! If it was untarred by a moron using an OS without a case-sensitive file-system one of them might have been lost. hrmm, I wish I had any way to verify this. */light bulb* I think I'm getting the flu just in time for exams. I was all geared to go to the movies last night and had to go home at the last minute because I felt like utter shit. Looking forward to holidays like everyone else. Some good parties planned already ("Pimps n bitches", Jodie's and "Jelly cocktail party" to name a few :o) as well as house-sitting Lauren's. Oh, and announcing the "find Tom a DJ name" competition. reply to this with your suggestions, winner gets a Freddo frog!. I'm mostly looking at (Happy)Hardcore/Trancecore (Fast, banging, electronic dance music). Current Mood: sick | | 2:31 pm |
I have turntables, mixer, headphones and the following records: New Sensation /Bang Da' Beats - Brisk and Fade feat. Kelly Mind Punks / Eyeopener - Brisk Vs. Scots Brown / Brisk and Trixxy Rescue Me / All that I want - DJ Wack'd /The Mckenzie Brothers (thats right, another remake of Bryan Adam's "Heaven") More details of my life when I tear myself away from them. You Behold the terrible visage of Project207.vbp. You feel much less sane
Just got home to continue on my graphics assignment to find that I'd uploaded the wrong version and cobbler isn't reachable on the network, I hope I actually saved it. Oh well, I suppose I need a break, 6 hours sleep will probably do me good. I never would have really believed just how incredibly horrible this assignmet/unit could really be if I hadn't gone through it myself. Its not conceptually challenging or even interesting. I'm not gaining any useful skills nor am I going to have a product I can be proud of (even if I did a 40/40 job). The entire process is excruciating and offensive. It's a useless and ill-defined piece of shit to be implemented in the worst language I've ever written in using only the utterly fucking useless text-book and an Internet search engine as references (And no, don't say anything about the lecture notes). I hate having to simply cobble together shit for marks, to know that a sub-standard job is all that's required(and, given the scope, warranted) and to put my name name on it at the end of it all. Thankfully, I'm sure my tune will change after 3pm tommorrow. Still deciding whether or not to go to Terracon. I'd like to see what its like this year, the club seems to be getting funner. I still can't quite shake the thought that, even if I did have the $120ish I reckon it'd cost, I could probably find ways to have more fun with the money. That and I'm not quite sure I'd be able to find a mutually acceptable hut arrangement. sleep. | | Tuesday, May 27th, 2003 | | 12:12 am |
F*!@k EMI
Spent the last day or so screwing around with the copy-protection on Massive Attacks's "100th Window" album. Got the vast majority of the CD to rip and am copying it on principle now. Its really depressing that this kinda shit's hitting the shelves and even more depressing that its being used by artists I really love. For those that haven't had the pleasure, the "copy-protection" employed basically involves making the cd not work on computers at all (it apparently severely cripples many macs as well). I really hope this techonology will get killed by consumer backlash or at least standardised so some kid in Europe can write an application which allows the discs to be read/ripped painlessly by 'ordinary' people. Went to GrooveFM cocktail party on Friday night. Music was crap(RnB) and the place was packed with FuBu clad wannabes that put on American accents. Still managed to have lots of fun though (with the aid of the world's dodgiest $4 cocktails). Comans 21st was fun, wish I hadn't gotten as trashed as I did. The Go club is coming together. For those who don't know, I'm involved with starting a Go club at uni. Anybody interested in learning or getting involved can email me or reply to this. We seem to be putting together a nice community and it should be alot of fun. I seem to be having a lot of vivid dreams which involve dying in horrible and graphic ways. Last night, I was murdered with a hypodermic syringe at the climax of some sort of game of political cat-and-mouse, in which I was a key player. Last week, my skull was cracked open in a hit-and-run and while I lay dying I had just enough time to reflect on the fact that even if I did survive, my brain had been permanently damaged and that life wouldn't be worth living anyway. Before that, I was spending a pleasant Sunday afternoon with my sister and asosorted randoms at not-quite-Mathilda-Bay foreshore, when there was a flash and an all too familiar cloud sprouted from across the river. In the seconds before searing hot winds melted flesh from bone, there was an indescribable wave of empathy and repentance as we realised everything we'd held dear didn't mean a thing when staring our own mortality in the eye. There're more but you get the idea... Its not so much the unpleasant nature of the dreams but the overwhelming intensity and the fact they involve physical sensations and emotions that I can't recall feeling in real life. Usually I can identify the external stimuli and factors that seem to cause my dreams, its just a little unsettling to find material in my head that has no apparent source. anyhoo..... enough ranting, more sleeping | | Tuesday, May 20th, 2003 | | 12:14 am |
Patience, n. A minor form of dispair, disguised as a virtue. Just saw the Matrix Reloaded, I didn't think it was particularly good but it was one of those movies you 'have to see'. It was slightly disappointing that I wasn't disappointed, it made me realise my expectations of life in general, are quite low at the moment. I don't quite get how people can get so worked up about one movie though. I mean, why are people so zealously attacking/defending this movie? Its a fucking movie. I guess its really no different to any form of fan-ism or hero worship.
Yet another weekend passed. Like the countless others it was full of fun, mayhem and debauchery, but they seem to be lacking in impact more recently. Daniel came up for the weekend on the spur of the moment, but somehow I didn't really care(even before we 'got started' Saturday night). We caught up Sunday/Monday, talked about old times, had a laugh, but the bonds between us are thin and withering, fading with the past.
I've gotten a new job with a company called Transpac. They specialise in packing/ unpacking home contents into boxes when people move homes. The Perth branch is just starting up so I haven't got any work yet, but it seems like fairly easy, enjoyable and casual work. It'd be nice to have money again (and to earn it in a sane and humane environment).
Holy Shit! my Algorithms project is due at 4:30pm today! uh-oh. |
