The Pre-TISLR workshop was held on January 11 and 12 at Elili Hotel. It’s part of a collaborative project between AAU and Minpaku-Japan. It aims to document corpora of local sign languages in Ethiopia and Japan.
Welcome to TISLR 15
Addis Ababa University in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA) is pleased to host the 15th Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research (TISLR 15) for the first time on the African continent. It will take place from January 14 – 17, 2025. TISLR 15 brings sign language specialists across the world to the political capital of the continent, Addis Ababa. It will primarily be held in person, virtually and hybrid.

What is the TISLR Conference?
The Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research Conference (TISLR) is a conference where sign language researchers from around the world meet every three years to present their research findings and discuss with each other.
The first conference was held in the year 1986 (1978 in the Ethiopian calendar) in a city called Rochester in the United States of America. Since then, it has been held every three years, mainly in Europe and America. The 14th round was held in Japan.
The main organizer of the conference is the Sign Language Linguistics Society (SLLS), an international professional association. The conference will be held only in institutions authorized by this society.
The 15th Round Conference on Theoretical Issues in the Study of Sign Languages
The 15th round of the TISLR conference will be held for the first time in Africa with Addis Ababa University as the host under the auspices of the SLLS from January 14 to January 17, 2025. It will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
What does the conference feature?
- Presentation by specially invited prominent sign language researchers;
- Stage and Poster presentations by Sign language researchers whose abstracts are accepted.
- Group/panel discussions;
- There will be various programs where professionals can exchange ideas/experiences with each other.
How to participate?
The main organizer of the conference is the Sign Language Linguistics Society (SLLS). SLLS aims to promote the study of sign languages on an international scale, and in this capacity provides support and assistance to sign language researchers. The conference will be held only in institutions authorized by this association. Therefore, it is necessary to be a member of the association to participate in the conference.
Becoming a member of the association is easy. It is possible to become a member of the association and participate in the conference by paying the association’s one-year membership fee along with the conference registration.

ጉባዔውን በጋራ ለማስተናገድ የሴቶችና ማህበራዊ ጉዳይ ሚኒስትሯ ኤርጎጌ ተስፋዬ (ዶ/ር) የዩኒቨርሲቲው ፕሬዝዳንት ሳሙኤል ክፍሌ (ዶ/ር) በዛሬው ዕለት የመግባብያ ስምምነት ተፈራርመዋል። የኢትዮጵያን ስም ከፍ የሚያደርጉና የሀገራትን ትስስር ለማጠናከር የሚያስችሉ ተግባራትን ዩኒቨርሲቲው እያከናወነ መሆኑን ዶ/ር ሳሙኤል በፊርማው ስነስርአት ላይ የገለፁ ሲሆን ዶ/ር እርጎጌ በበኩላቸው አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፓን አፍሪካ ዩኒቨርስቲ እንደሆነ ዳግም ያረጋገጠበት መሆኑን ገልጸዋል።

Official Languages of the Conference -Ethiopian Sign Language, American Sign Language, English and International Sign. Additionally, CART services will be provided in English.
