      音声、語構造、文構造、語の意味、文脈、社会と文化、規則・慣用と文体などの観点から現代英語の実態を論じた書。著者はAmerican Heritage Dictionary(AHD) と関わりにある人でAHD はもちろん辞書への言及も多い。語法と辞書に関心のある人には（専門的な立場からは少し物足りないかもしれないが）格好の読み物である。p.73に代名詞の一覧表があるが、third-person nonbinary singularとしてthey, their, them, themselves を載せているなど、記述主義的な観点から現代英語の語法を観察していることがよく分かる。平易な英語で書かれているので、気軽に読める書である。
