Let's Geog
Geography is always on the move, so let's catch up with it!
About Me
Hello fellow geoggers! If you love geography or would like to know more about this amazing subject then you have come to the right place. ‘Let’s Geog’ was first uploaded in July 2013 and for me is the best example of killing two birds with one stone. When thinking originally about creating a blog my first intentions were to do with education, as I am hoping to expand my subject knowledge before commencing a Geography degree at University, however I then also realised that I love to write, especially creatively (one of my small plays was performed in the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester this year) and I thought that if I created a blog then I can channel my creativity with my love for geography, so ‘Let’s Geog’ was born.
More about me – My name is Thomas Hoather and I am currently 17 years old but will turn 18 in May 2014, 19 the May after that and you get the picture. I grew up in Winsford in Cheshire and I go to Knutsford Academy sixth form. I studied five AS levels Geography, History Conflict, Maths Applied, Psychology and English Language. I decided that I wanted to take Geography on to degree level for, well, many reasons. One is that I have enjoyed geography lessons since about the age of 11 where I was first properly introduced to it in year 7 (or 6th grade for those American geoggers out there), there are great geography teachers at my school, both current teachers are BA human geographers. I just found the whole subject interesting, especially the idea that humans affect the earth and the earth affects humans. The best example of this is with natural hazards such as avalanches. Avalanches can be caused by human activity (e.g. hiking) but this then impacts the humans on the mountain pass by either killing them or making them homeless (there are many more primary and secondary impacts with natural hazards, but these are the main two) I will explore more in my ongoing posts.
Another reason is that the world is always changing therefore so is geography. Tectonic plates, urbanisation, migration even soil erosion is changing everyday due to many internal and external factors and thus the subject has to change to suit this process. Geographers can now use computer software and mapping that they just didn’t have 15 years ago and that makes me wonder, what will geography hold for us in the next 15 years? Therefore I guess that you could say that I like geography because it’s always evolving, like us.
Thanks for taking your time to read this page and I hope that you stay to enjoy the weekly posts that I will be uploading. Right then, have a nice day and keep on geogging.
Tom
I am proud to say that I also achieved my 2nd Dan Black belt in Sheffield in May 2011.

Lovely site Thomas!
Thanks I hope that you enjoy my future posts 🙂
Happy blogging. I used to know a man who was a geographer and he ending up involved in mapping Mars. I thought that was pretty impressive. Good luck with school.
Thanks yeah that does sound interesting, see this is what makes geography great, that its even expanding into other planets 🙂
Hi Thomas, thanks for visiting and following my blog. It’s cool that you have a really high interest in Geography – I found it difficult to like when I was in school *cough*. Now with the opportunity going to different places, slowly I become more interested to Geography. So your blog seems like the right place to go to fulfill the new interest! Nice to know you 🙂
Cheers thank you Niken and no problem 🙂 and I too hope that this blog will help you admire geography, everything helps right? 😛
What a great blog and great topic. Thanks for the follow.
It’s fine and thank you for reading my blog. 🙂
Although you must be tired from both jogging and geogging ;P
Hey,
I love geography or rather I used to love it. It will be good to get back in touch with the subject through your posts.
Have a good time blogging or as you say, geogging! 🙂
-HA
Cheers thanks I hope that my posts can rekindle your love for geography, and I really like your writing style, what do you do?
Thomas, thanks for following “Inter States,” my scenario novel set in 2040. The next installment is coming soon, and I’ll be sending out notifications via email, Facebook, WordPress, and Wikispaces. Stay tuned. And please don’t hesitate to tell anyone you think might be interested. This is a strictly viral, global, non-commercial, peer-to-peer effort. – Ralph (see https://interstates2040.wikispaces.com)
Super cool! Love the photograph; where was it taken?
Thanks, my friend took the picture whilst we were on a school trip to snowdonia, in the same trip we also went to dinorwig power station. The lake did have a name but it was in welsh so unfortunately I can’t remember but it was definitely in Wales so I can give you that as my answer.
That’s awesome! I’ve yet to travel across the pond but I really want to! Have you ever been to the U.S.?
Yes I have my profile picture/let’s start geogging picture was actually taken on a cruise ship sailing on the east coast of America. And I hope that I can go back again in the near future, possibly check out the west coast next time 🙂
Very cool. I live on the East Coast but I’d love to travel to the West Coast too.
Ooh really? That’s cool, where specifically?
I live in New York State, about an hour and a half away from the city, but I’m moving down there in January! I can’t wait! 🙂

Hi Tom,
Thank you for Following my blog!

Geography is Indeed an interesting subject and I wish you Good Luck with that Thomas.. 🙂
Greetings, Thomas. Thanks for visiting my blog, The World’s Fare. I think you might like Waltzing Australia, too, given your interest in geography. And, as a member of the Society of Women Geographers, I applaud your choice of subject. Geography is so multifaceted, one can never run out of interesting things to learn. Best of luck in pursuing your passion. May it lead you not only through school, but also on many exciting adventures.
Cynthia
Hi there! And many thanks for the follow. It’s always flattering to know someone has taken to time to read and then sign up.
Geography, History Conflict, Maths Applied, Psychology and English Language – sounds like a good mix to me, and far more than I was capable of handling at your age, nearly 40 years ago. I’ve learnt so much more since people stopped trying to teach me. Whatever you do, keep reading!
You’ll have noticed that my main concern is climate change. As a specialist, you might care to guest post some time?
Good luck.
Roger
Hi Roger thanks for commenting. I will try and read your blog in greater depth whenever I have a spare moment and I will try to comment, it’s nice of you to suggest that I should get involved. I hope that you too will come back and get involved with some of my blog’s interesting topics 🙂
Hey Thomas. Just wanted to thank you for checking out my blog and following. I was looking at your blog and it inspired me to do some photos of geography and nature. I hope you’ll like them!
Hi emj thanks for finding my blog as an inspiration that means a lot to me 🙂
And I’m sure to take a look, I’m looking forward to seeing them
Hi Thomas,
I love geography too. That is such an interesting subject. I hope you find some interesting projects in school and after. 😉
Thanks for stopping by my blog and deciding to follow me.
Thanks capt Jill and yes I’m hoping for some interesting topics in the future so fingers crossed 🙂
Thomas,
Thanks so much for visiting and following my blog! Your blog is very colourful and interesting. Did you coin the verb “geog”, or was that already done? I love maps, as well as travel, and I feel sad that printed maps are dying out: tried to go buy some today and the map store is closed.
Hi Ellen aww that’s annoying and yes that is a shame, that’s unfortunately what happens when maps on smartphones appear. And I would like to this so but I assume that someone else out there must have also thought of the pun (whether it’s been used in the same context I don’t know)
Great site! My son was a geography major at the university–a great subject. I hope you do well! Thanks for visiting my blogsite “Laura’s Lens!”
Hi Laura, thanks and thank you for visiting my blog 🙂 which university did your son go to?
Concordia U. in Seward, NE, USA He plans to be a high school science/social science teacher.
Well I wish him all the best 🙂
Thank you–and the same to you! 🙂
Thanks for following my blog! I am geographically challenged unless I have a map in front of me. But I am a master map reader and can navigate anywhere as long as the map is a detailed one. I am looking forward to reading your blog!
Hi Virginia and thank you visiting my blog! 🙂 so would you rather use a map than a GPS?
Good question. It depends on the circumstance. When I am driving, the GPS is great because I don’t have to endanger other drivers when I squint at the map. However, GPS is limited by the screen size in how much information it shows you at one time and I am continually frustrated that I can’t see details that are a few miles away. Maps are better at that point so you can see the bigger picture.
Good answer. 🙂 and I completely agree with you. Thanks for replying so quickly
Hi Tom, Thank you for following my photography blog. I hope you’re inspired. I am enjoying your posts!
Hi Jane and it’s great to hear that you like my blog. And I do enjoy looking at your pictures, do you use any filters or do you use the picture that you get directly from your camera? Either way I love the tone and texture in your photographs 🙂
Brilliant blog mate! Thanks for liking my poetry 🙂
Thanks and no problem 🙂
Thanks for the follow. Blessings
Thanks Sue I hope that you enjoy my blog. 🙂
Hi Thomas – hope you get the course you want. I read geography at oxford so am a fellow geo – just the best start in the world!
Wow so you studied geography at Oxford then, what was that like? And I love how you have made your blog, very original 🙂 I wish you and your dog all the best
Thanks. Oxford was great really great and set me up for life long learning. It is such a varied subject you can take it anywhere you like.
That is exactly what I tell people when they ask me why did I choose geography, I just love that it opens many pathways once you’ve completed the degree 🙂
Great blog Thomas! Thanks for the follow. Geography had always been one of my favorite subjects, hence I travel to know more about his world and write about it. Please do keep coming.
Thanks Swamiu (is that right? If so that’s an interesting name, do you know it’s origin?), I’m glad that you enjoy geography and I hope that my blog is a useful tool to find out more. 🙂
Its Swami Upendra and reverse of the actual name that is Upendra Swami. Upendra is my name and has mythological origins while Swami is my family name
Is it Indian tradition to write your name in reverse? So for example would mine be Hoather Thomas?
not at all. It is quite nontraditional. I just adopted it to make better flow of words.
Fair enough 🙂
Hi Thomas. Thanks for following my blog. I’m not a very imaginative blogger, and I admit, that even in retirement, I do find it quite difficult to give this hobby the attention that it deserves. Even so, I hope that you find something of interest there.
A very quick look at your blog shows that it has a great future, as indeed I hope you do. Geography has always interested me, and retirement has allowed me to travel a little more. I hope that you will also be able to. It is certainly easier to travel now, than it was when I was young.
Good luck with your blogging, education and future career. Dave.
Thanks Dave that’s nice of you to say 🙂 can I ask what you did before you retired? And yes due to faster trains and planes travelling seems to be not only easier but more efficient too
I was an Engineer, working on helicopter development for all my working life Thomas. No geography, except for finding my way around when required on business.
Wow that sounds fascinating did you ever work with/for the military?
Wonderful blog Thomas, enjoy geo !!! Im looking forward to reading more. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog ! Have a great day !… Ellie
Thanks Ellie! I hope that you enjoy my further posts. 🙂
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for checking out my photography blog and following! I always appreciate a new set of eyes on my work! You have an interesting blog yourself! One of the hats I wear from time to time is as a cartographer, making GIS based maps for hiking guides and ski areas here in Vermont and New England. The advances in the technology–both GIS and computer design tools–have really come a long way in the 20 years I’ve been doing it!
Hi John and it’s great to have yet another geogger join the community 🙂 and I really love how you use zoom on your images, I find that it really captures the detail (especially of plants and animals)

Hi Thomas! I love your blog. It’s amazing 🙂 However, I wanted to ask you how did you popularize your blog this much? I’m doing my best to promote my blog, but I don’t think it’s working… 😀 Help me! https://englishbyluka.wordpress.com/
Hi Luka, your blog has over 200 hundred followers so you must be doing something right. I find that if you visit other people’s blogs and leave a comment they will often visit you back 🙂 Just like I have done after receiving your comment on my blog.
Thanks! Actually, it has about 40 followers. The widget on my blog shows the wrong number… I don’t know why. Whatever the case, I’ll definetely use your advice, although it’s not that easy to find blogs such as yours. 😀
Hi Thomas! Thanks for visiting our blog and for the follow. As a fellow blogger you know how great it makes you feel to know that someone is reading your words, ideas, opinions, experiences, etc. Until we began researching travel as a viable lifestyle I must admit that my interest in geography was rather embarrassing but now… Now, as we research places that we’re interested in, including modes of transportation, climate, culture, history and on and on, the geography plays such an important part in the whole story. I’m looking forward to reading your blog and wish you much success in the many paths you’ll be trailblazing! Anita @ No Particular Place To Go
I love geography, always did! Thank you for the follow. Please be aware that my blog is a bilingual one.
So you may get links to some poems in English as well as to some in Italian…
I’m trying to keep the posting balanced between the two languages.
Anna
Ok thanks for the heads up 🙂
Hi Tom, it’s really nice to meet you. Amazing photography! Your excitement really jumps off the screen, wonderful!
Christy
Cheers thank you Christy I hope that you enjoy my further posts too 🙂
Hi Tomas, Thank you for stopping by my blog, Wresting Pollyanna, and following it. I hope you find some interesting posts there.
Best wishes to you in your study of Geography; your passion shows. I am glad you are blogging about geography and sharing your experiences. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Carolin I hope that you keep coming back to read any future posts 🙂
Thanks for liking and following the George R. Stewart pages, Thomas. Since you like geography, you’ll certainly enjoy his books. The most “geographic” are likely U.S. 40, NA 1, North, NA 1, South and The California Trail. Incidentally, I was introduced to Stewart as a geographer by a high school friend, Tom Vale, who went on to become a distinguished geography professor at U of Wisc, Madison. Tom and his wife Geraldine also did a classic update of US 40 – US 40 Today.
Stewart also inspired other writers of place: Wallace Stegner, Larry McMurtry, Ivan Doig, William Least-Heat Moon. (He also inspired Jimi Hendrix and Stephen King but that’s another story.) Stewart inspired a musician of place, Philip Aaberg, who wrote a beautiful composition inspired by Earth Abides.
Thanks to Stewart, I became a teacher – then a Park Ranger – then a NASA Educator.
I encourage you to read his books, to keep up this excellent blog, and to follow your geographic bliss.
By the way, George R. Stewart can easily be abbreviated as GeoS. Isn’t that interesting.
Cheers
Thank you
Yes that is an interesting coincidence and I’ll try and have a look at some of his books, thanks for the recommendation 🙂
Thank you so much for visiting my blog..!! And the follow 🙂
Dear Thomas:
Thanks for following my blog: “Breaking the Cycle.”
I admire your interest in geography. What a great idea for a blog. You seem like a very interesting fellow. My husband is an Arsenal fan, but also watched Manchester City religiously.
I look forward to learning more about you, and where things are in the world through your blog.
Best regards,
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth, no problem and thank you for following Let’s Geog; welcome to the geogging community 🙂
And also your husband has good taste in football teams
