Fraser started High School today! This was the best photo from before school this morning – despite the hands in the pockets!

Two Yorkshire Hills

Yesterday gave us the chance to squeeze in two additional hills, both in the North York Moors. The first was Roseberry Topping, a distinctive peak to the south-east of Middlesbrough, It was a climb of a little over 200m and quite a short walk so we had that one done in just over an hour (with time to enjoy the views). Then it was on to Stokesley and a climb up Cringle Moor to Drake Howe which marks the top. This was a little higher and further, and as it happened, windier.
So Sally is now on 46 hills, only 4 more to go before 24 January.
Boxing Day hill
December 30, 2014
Our chosen hill for Boxing Day was Dent, a smallish hill on the far west of the Lake District fells. The climb was through forestry from Nannycatch Lane. Views from the top would have been great had it not been a little gloomy. It’s a long hill with two tops although the eastern one is higher.
We dropped from there to Uldale Farm and walked back along the oddly enclosed valley of Kirk Beck to Raven Crag and from there back to the car. By the time we embarked on this last section hail and cold rain had arrived and we wished we had set off half an hour earlier!
A hill in the snow

Yesterday was hill 41 for Sally (27 for Duncan, 23 for Fraser) and it was a beautiful if rather tiring walk through the snow to the summit of Tosson Hill (440m), a short distance on from Simonside, but a good couple of kilometres through occasionally deep snow. The sun stayed out for most of the walk but became more watery through the day. We had climbed from the hamlet of Tosson up through an area where the trees have recently been felled, making for remarkable different feel to the climb and the views along the way.

Mud and more mud

Duncan and Fraser spent a day near Alston on Thursday at a straw bale building project. For Duncan this was preparatory work (along with some colleagues) for a work project next year. For Fraser he was made to go along despite a few protestations. The job of the day was applying a first coat of clay plaster to the building which involved spraying it on and then working it into the bales. In the tricky corners the job was all done by hand and we also had to fill some of the gaps with ‘rats’ made of straw and wet clay which were stuffed in to the holes. Fraser ended up having a great time and getting somewhat muddy in the process! He particularly enjoyed working on the fiddly bits under the eaves.
A final couple of days on Skye

Our final full day on Skye (Saturday) was a day of pottering with Jon, Fiona, Amy & Cara and George, Janet, Edie & Will. In the morning it was a trip to Ord beach where we launched a variety of kayaks into the sheltered bay. Some swam but some stayed clear of the water! All the children and some of the adults made use of the boats. After lunch back at the house we headed out to Tarskavaig, a short distance down the coast, for a short walk along the rocky coast, past an old and oddly situated chapel, and out over rugged promontories to the tip of the point.

Sunday was a morning of packing up and a short wander down to the ruined castle at Tokavaig before heading away and into the rain. We had hoped to stay in Scotland for another day but Monday dawned as wet with dire weather forecast so a quick trip to Loch of the Lowes (where we saw two ospreys) preceded a drive home.
A bit more rain

Thursday was a bit better than our sodden day on Raasay but showers still hounded us. We had a trip over the Armadale and sown to Aird where we managed a very short walk. Then it was back over the hill to Tokavaig and to the beach where we had a go on the canoe, taking it in and around the bay with the hills of Skye as a backdrop. Jon, Fiona, Amy and Cara arrived from Glasgow in the evening.
Friday was wet, very wet, our hill climb was put off but Sally, Duncan and Jon did get up Sgaith-bheinn Tokavaig in the early evening while the others walked over the road to Ord – where we joined them as we descended back off the hill.
Three hills in one day

Our first full day on Skye saw us walking a horseshoe of Hills from Broadford. We had arrived on Skye a little earlier than expected as the weather had been so poor on the way up so we just drove all the way in a single go, stopping only in Fort William for a snack and a look around the little museum there. The house we were staying in at Tokavaig proved to have suitable entertainment, including a makeshift table tennis table in the kitchen!
Tuesday saw us ready for a few hills and Beinn na Callich, Beainn Dearg Mhor and Beinn Dearg Bheag were the chosen option. It started sunny and warm but the clouds soon came in making it probably a little easier of a walk without direct hot sun. The air was still clear so the views were long. Lunch was had at the first top with snacks saved for the others too.
Wednesday started fine and bright and was earmarked for a trip our to Raasay and the climbing of Dun Caan, something we did achieve but for the most part of the 16km in pouring rain and often limited or non-existant visibility. As we left the island again the clouds cleared and our high point of the day emerged from the fog!
Rowing

Fraser has now completed his 10 week learn to row course at Tyne United Rowing Club at Newburn. However he’s still booked in for Tuesdays and Wednesdays over the next few weeks to continue. At some point they’ll try out the narrower boats but only once they are stable enough so as not to risk a capsize.
