Really liked the guest reviewers; the three-way opinions brought out some interesting counter-reactions and added some frisson to the proceedings. The “This American Life”-esque packages were really well done.
And it was great to hear Bob Byrne expressing his well balanced opinions again; his carefully considered views on the Irish comic scene are sorely missed.

The new, structured format, the third (and fourth) contributing voice, the considered reviews, the focused interviews, all invested with a good-natured sense of fun, wit and personality – it’s a fitting expression of the Irish creative scene and its interests. Looking forward to the next one.

Vicki Pollard is the heart and soul of modern Britain. But who’s the emblematic Irishman? Shane MacGowan? Brendan Behan? Colm Meaney? I saw Meaney in the “sexy flesh” at the premier of that “Intermission” movie in Cambridge, MA. Lots of Micks in Boston, of course, and the premiere was well-attended. Pity it was such a rubbish film. But there ya go.

Took me years to figure it out, though, since it’s not spelled out in the film. Good film, though, except the casting of that obese opera singer as the leader of the skinheads. Pity about the star, Ken Wahl, getting that horrible spinal injury that sidelined him for life.
Cheers!

Thanks a million for mentioning Half Past Adnger and the deal with IDW, much appreciated. One teeny correction though: It’s DAVE Hendrick who’s writing the back-up story, not his brother John, who is the proprietor of the fine BIg Bang comic book store in Dundrum. A big detail you guys didn’t mention there is the fact that the art for that story will be provided by one Mr. Declan Shalvey.

Mon, 08 Oct 2012 13:37:37 +0000https://thecomiccast.com/?p=1443#comment-6105Great to hear you back on the air lads. Enjoyed the news update show.
Once piece of news that you neglected to mention was the hugely entertaining open debate over the last month between Dave Sim (Cerebus, Glamourpuss) and Kim Thompson of Fantagraphics (his former nemesis) on The Comics Journal. Its worth getting up to speed on this if you have a week or two to spare: https://www.tcj.com/dave-sim-responds-to-the-fantagraphics-offer/
In summary, fire destroys a load of original Cerebus negatives in August while they were being scanned for digital release. Sim dramatically threatens to quit comics and get rid of his 30 year archive of art via 1-800-GOT-JUNK. Kim Thompson steps up with an offer to reprint the commercial parts of Cerebus. Dave Sim, the standard-bearer of self-publishing, insists that negotiations take place in public and makes increasingly bizarre demands. An amazing open contract negotiation then takes place in the comments section below the above article. Insanity ensues.
Then, out of the blue, Sim announces a deal, arranged in secret, with IDW to republish a retrospective. Everyone says a collective “WTF!?!”
Brilliant, entertaining stuff.
