Melissa Gilbert becomes insufferable with her apologia for Timothy Busfield
Actress Melissa Gilbert continues to taint her legacy with a head-shakingly naive defense of her now disgraced husband Timothy Busfield, who now faces sexual abuse charges in New Mexico:
Timothy Busfield’s wife Melissa Gilbert is asking a judge to keep her husband “safe” as he remains in New Mexico facing charges of child sex abuse.Seriously? Because the following article suggests otherwise:
The West Wing actor was booked by Albuquerque police on charges of child sex abuse, stemming from allegations that he inappropriately touched a minor on the set of a TV series he was directing in the state.
He faces two counts of criminal sexual contact of a child under 13 and one count of child abuse.
Busfield is currently being held without bail, according to jail records. A judge will hold a detention hearing on Tuesday to determine whether Busfield will remain in jail.
In a new filing, obtained by People, 75 letters of support for the actor were included from family, colleagues and friends.
In Gilbert’s letter, she wrote, “The reality is that Tim Busfield is my love, my rock, my partner in business and life. He is my comfort and my council. His joy, humor and quick wit bring sparkle to my life. Tim is, quite simply, the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family.”
“I can tell you, and anyone, that I know Tim better and more intimately than anything in his life ever has. Conversely, he knows me in the same way,” she continued. “Tim has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known. He has dedicated his spiritual self to always being of service to others. He starts every day with kindness and compassion.”
She wrote that on “every single set where Tim is working,” she’s had people tell her that Busfield is “their favorite director ever.”
“Actually, people say that to me in restaurants, on red carpets and in grocery stores too. His former students, tell me he was their favorite teacher ever. I cannot tell you how it has warmed my heart over and over again to hear people, from so many different walks of life, tell me they encountered my husband in some way and he is their favorite. He is my favorite,” she wrote.
But her approach is not appreciated by her friends and family. When a lesbian's the one who's a realist, that's saying something. And who in the right frame of mind can allow the couple near their children based on what's been reported so far?
”People are having a really hard time with this right now and stepping back from Melissa,” one insider told me.
Friends would like to support her but can’t understand why she is backing her husband when he has been accused “several times” of something so abhorrent.
“No one with kids will go near them right now.”
Sister Sara Gilbert ‘grossed out’
And her sister, Sara Gilbert, is also said to be “grossed out”. The two have never been described as close, but Melissa supported Sara when she came out as a lesbian in the early 2000s.
”I always kinda knew,” Melissa told Sara on “The Talk” in 2011.
“People can get over a lot of things — but not this,” one friend said. “Everyone is appalled.”
Equally appalling is that Gilbert's mom is also siding with Busfield, as are at least a few of his co-stars on Thirtysomething. I guess they're that worried about losing their residuals for reruns of what was otherwise a left-leaning drama, huh? As plenty may expect, it won't be surprising if reruns are taken off the air along with a number of other films and TV shows that Busfield acted/directed/produced. This is yet another sad discovery of what goes on in the sewers of Hollywood, and another performer's destroyed his legacy by acting as though being a Tinseltowner means never having to say he's sorry. But, as we see here, he's learning that there will come a heavy price, and now he's paying it. And Gilbert, lest we forget, is making things worse along with a number of other veterans by defending such a repugnant person.
