A privateer does not operate on ideals. It depends on diesel, spare parts, food, medicine, and rest. Ships break down. Crews get hurt. Engines overheat. Electronics fail. All of that requires ports. In the modern Caribbean, ports are not places where an armed civilian vessel can just drift in and tie up casually. Firearm regulations are strict and often unforgiving. Ammunition alone can lead to arrest and detention. This is not hypothetical. It is enforced every day. An armed private vessel crewed by civilians would arrive like a live grenade rolling across the quay. No harbor master wants that liability. No customs officer wants to explain why they let it pass.

The analogy here isn’t romantic privateers chasing big merchant ships. It’s more like chasing motorcycles on a crowded highway without traffic cameras or police radios. Cartel vessels are quick, disposable, and built to disappear. They don’t carry valuable cargo that needs to arrive safely. Instead, they dump loads, sink their hulls, and vanish into the mangroves. The privateer looks for empty seas while the real activity sneaks past through routes that change weekly.
The Caribbean has experienced this situation before. During Prohibition, rum runners and federal agents engaged in a game of cat and mouse offshore. The runners adapted quickly than the enforcement efforts. They used smaller boats, conducted nighttime runs, and relied on local knowledge. Even then, enforcement depended on bases, ports, and cooperation. Remove those supports, and the hunter becomes blind and slow.
What remains is an image problem layered over a logistics challenge. An armed private vessel near island waters appears less like law enforcement and more like a threat. The violence, though ugly, fit into a recognizable economic loop. Modern drug trafficking offers no such system. Narcotics cannot be sold through legal channels. Smuggling vessels are often built cheaply, abandoned quickly, and insured by entities unlikely to appear in court. Seizing one is like netting driftwood. It may seem like action, but it does not cover the expenses.
History proves this point. When privateers couldn’t find valuable prizes, they cut corners or crossed lines. In the late eighteenth century, some American privateers turned to neutral shipping when enemy trade dried up, leading to diplomatic crises and piracy accusations. The desire for profit distorts behavior. When the prizes disappeared, so did discipline. The same pressure will exist here, but with even less reward. However, it works against the vessel’s design. It increases drag, complicates control, and signals intentions without enhancing capability. Modern counter-narcotics efforts rely on intelligence fusion, financial tracking, international cooperation, and sustained political pressure. Privateering offers none of these. It replaces leverage with spectacle.
The United States already possesses unmatched naval and law enforcement power. Its issue is not a lack of force but the challenge of coordination across borders, agencies, and political cycles. Reviving letters of marque does not resolve this issue; it sidesteps it. History shows that when states avoid tackling tough problems by outsourcing violence, they often end up paying more—more money, lost credibility, and lives.
Conclusion

Ultimately, the end of reviving letters of marque is more of an illusion than a concrete plan. From a distance, it appears like a firm option, a possible foothold when the problem seems endless and frustrating. Up close, it dissolves into heat shimmer and wishful thinking. International law dismisses it, ports cannot support it, navies will not endorse it, and the economic arguments against it fall apart. What remains is a gesture that promises action but quietly drains momentum.
There is also human geography that cannot be ignored. The Caribbean is home to a large expatriate and cruising community. It introduces ambiguity, increases the number of actors, and weakens accountability. It asks the sea to accept a false story that no longer matches the charts. The more difficult work remains unglamorous and slow—coordination, intelligence, diplomacy, and persistence. But those are the tools suited for the waters we navigate today, not the ones from old maps and faded logs.

Internally, I’m skeptical of my team’s decision to rely on a third-party risk assessment of an entity that was breached, especially since they handled the post-incident breach analysis for reconnection. Externally, I’ll need to explain the decision-making process to auditors and possibly regulators, depending on the damages.
When a vendor walks back into the room after a breach, it feels a bit like a sailor returning from a storm with a cracked mast and a smile that says all is well. No seasoned captain buys it. A breach changes the relationship. You need to see the knots they tied, the planks they replaced, and the repairs that need to be inspected for quality. Trust does not grow from charm. It grows from proof.
The first proof is the post breach incident analysis. Think of it as the ship log after a wreck. If the pages are too clean, you know the crew rewrote the night. You want stains, crossed out guesses, and the blunt story of how the hull gave way. When a vendor cannot name the root cause or pretends the damage was mild, they are already hiding the next mistake.
A compromise assessment follows. This is the search for stowaways. Attackers who slip through leave small signs behind. A strange footprint. A loose board. A familiar pattern in the dust. A vendor that avoids this search is not ready to be trusted again. If they refuse to look for hidden trouble, you can assume it is still there.
A forensic analysis report is a level deeper. This is when you bring in someone who does not owe the vendor anything. A third party is like a diver who swims down to inspect the keel. They see cracks the crew never mentioned. If the vendor pushes back on this, you have to ask why they fear an unfiltered set of eyes.
You also need a real remediation plan. This is more than a promise to patch holes. It should read like a blueprint with names, dates, and clear measures of progress. If they hand you a plan full of warm language and empty lines, they are giving you hope instead of work. And hope never fixed a broken system.
Policies and procedures need a fresh coat of paint as well. A breach forces any crew to rethink its routines. If the policies look untouched, it means they learned nothing. If they updated only the introductions and left the real process unchanged, they are trying to look busy without changing their habits.
Next comes evidence that they actually built something new. Not descriptions. Not assurances. You want to see the upgraded locks, the strengthened gates, the new watch schedule. Without this proof, the vendor is that sailor who claims they repaired the hull but refuses to let you walk the deck.
Their compliance posture should shift too. A breach exposes where controls failed. If they claim full compliance without showing how they reassessed those controls, something feels off. It is like saying the compass was true even though the ship drifted. You need to see how they checked their bearings.
An independent security assessment is the real test. This is the rival captain who boards the ship with no need to flatter anyone. They tug at lines, open boxes, and call out problems plainly. A vendor that fears this visit is telling you their repairs will not survive daylight.
Continuous monitoring is another anchor. Without it the vendor is just hoping the sea stays calm. You want to see the tools, the alerts, the crew assigned to watch the horizon. A vendor without active monitoring is simply waiting for the next wave to knock them flat.
A vendor risk management plan helps you understand their future behavior. It shows whether they intend to check their own work or drift back into old habits. Think of it as the chart for the next season. If the chart is missing or vague, you will be the one blindsided when the next storm arrives.
The communication plan is the final piece. When trouble returns, and it always does, you need to know how fast the vendor will speak up. Some try to plug leaks in silence, hoping no one notices. Others call you early before the damage spreads. You want the second kind. A vendor who will raise the flag before the ship takes on water.
Meanwhile, your leadership team is likely looking at you as a barrier to the “business”. You’ll have to explain multiple times that hooking up for the fun of it isn’t going to work and now you’re likely in personal liability land. This is where CEO’s like to say they are the great deciders right up until the trial.
All these documents do not magically restore trust. They give you clues. They reveal whether the vendor faced the breach with honest eyes or tried to paint over the damage. A breach can teach an organization how to grow stronger. It can also expose that they never took security seriously. Your job is to look past the words and decide which one you are dealing with.

If an operator triggers the same decision point across multiple models simultaneously and uses the combined output as the next step, I believe the accuracy could greatly exceed what a single model can provide. I describe this as six sigma fidelity. I also suggest that this number might be even higher. Multiple decision engines help reduce noise and generate a consensus path that resembles a control system shift rather than a single point of failure. This pushes AI-driven attack chains into a realm that looks more like industrial automation than human-led security work.
I point to the central cloud services as a vulnerability for attackers, which makes sense on the surface. If I rely on Anthropic, Gemini, or OpenAI, I inherit their monitoring. But I can’t assume threat actors will keep using those endpoints. Why would they? Smaller models already run well on tiny boards with almost no footprint. Those setups can sit inside local infrastructure with virtually no telemetry. A determined group could run a full attack stack inside a small appliance. That becomes invisible to defenders who depend on cloud model monitoring to detect problems.
Encrypted containers within SaaS platforms present an additional challenge. I refer to them as locations for hidden computation, which I believe is accurate; a more fascinating aspect, however, is the route control. If an AI can alter its own network routes during an operation, then traditional traffic analysis becomes ineffective. We can’t assume defenders will keep up with these changes, yet most organizations are unable to even monitor complex east-west traffic within their cloud environments. A self-adjusting path created on demand by an agent could easily bypass signature-based tools without much effort.
In my previous research, I used vulnerability databases and open-source data to improve attack techniques. This is important, but the real story is how fast things are changing. A model capable of scraping, correlating, and synthesizing these sources can analyze thousands of potential pathways before a human analyst even completes a single validation step. I might be underestimating how intense that acceleration feels from the defender’s perspective. It doesn’t just shorten the kill chain; it redefines the entire concept of reconnaissance.
I assume attackers will eliminate inefficient steps. This suggests a comprehensive overhaul of the entire intrusion process. Think about how factory managers remove bottlenecks in a production line. Attackers will do the same once they can treat their AI systems as adjustable machines. That means the rough edges where defenders still operate will shrink. I would argue that this is the first time an intrusion chain can be optimized in a consistent way.
The Anthropic report focuses on one campaign. Consider what happens when the architecture expands. When attackers realize they don’t need human oversight for anything except approvals, the entire approach to intrusion changes. It becomes a matter of scheduling and resource management. This shifts the threat closer to a numbers game where volume matters more than precision. I even wonder whether defenders are still thinking in terms of human intent, while attackers move toward automated throughput.
This highlights the challenge of detection. A cloud provider can identify an account engaging in unusual activity, but that may not always be sufficient. When an attacker runs the stack on local hardware without the provider’s visibility (removing the third party), detection options are limited to what the target can observe. Most targets lack the detailed monitoring needed to detect coordinated agent activity that appears as normal internal tasks. Reports that enable detection of misuse depend on the defender having insight into the attacker. In a local compute environment, that insight is no longer available.
Once the computation is concealed, defenders must focus on impact rather than activity. That means attacks become visible only after changes occur in the environment, by which time the attacker has already advanced several steps. The threat then feels like a ghost, appearing only after the damage is done. That also requires defenders to rethink their entire monitoring approach instead of relying on traditional telemetry.
Many people compare future attacks to science fiction rather than industrial design. Attackers won’t pursue theatrical methods; they’ll focus on reliable production. Taking this reasoning seriously, the threat is not only more severe than expected but also more normal. It will appear like a well-tuned machine, performing exactly as it was intended to.
Defenders expecting drama will overlook the quiet parts where the real danger lies. If the press wants to treat this campaign as an alarming anomaly, I see it differently. This is early proof of a shift in how intrusion efforts are created, refined, and deployed. The report presents a narrative about misuse. I am referring to the beginning of an engineered system that will become more powerful once attackers stop relying on the cloud and start building their own infrastructure around these models. Although this is a more unsettling outlook, it aligns better with the direction of the technology than the public story.

]]>Six months after finishing chemo and radiation for triple-negative breast cancer, I had my first follow-up appointment, which included a cancer antigen blood test, mammogram, and breast MRI.
Walking back into the medical building this year felt heavier than I expected. The sights, the smells, even the sounds of the waiting room all came rushing back. I told myself it was just a checkup, just routine, but my body remembered.
And then the results came in, one by one: normal.
Cancer antigen test – normal.
Mammogram – normal.
MRI – normal.
My oncologist said my surgical outcomes were “very good,” and the mammogram tech complimented my lumpectomy scar, calling it “fantastic,” as if it were a neat little sewing project instead of a reminder of survival. I laughed, and then I exhaled, a real exhale, one that reached all the way down.
It wasn’t just the cancer follow-ups. I also had my annual brain and spine MRI, along with a check-in with my neurologist as part of my MS care. No new lesions found. MS remains stable, with five years of stability, which is an exceptional achievement. My neurologist is pleased with my progress and notes that the diet, physical, and cognitive exercises I’ve been doing are making a real difference. Now, my annual MRI is every two years, a small but meaningful reward for all the effort I’ve invested.
For the first time in a long time, I felt normal. Not the old normal, carefree and untouched, but the new one, stitched together from scans, medications, scars, and lessons learned the hard way. Normal comes with gratitude for small things: a scar that heals beautifully, a body that mostly cooperates, a heart that hasn’t skipped a beat in panic (at least not too often).
There’s still a whisper of fear because follow-ups are never the end, but there’s also a real, tangible relief I can carry for now. Relief that allows me to think about sailing trips again instead of chemo drips. Relief that reminds me how fragile and precious life is, and how lucky I am to still be in it.
Normal doesn’t mean perfect. It doesn’t erase last year’s chaos or the nights spent awake worrying about “what if.” I get to repeat this follow-up every six months for the next three years because my cancer is particularly aggressive and the first three years after treatment are the most likely for recurrence. But it does mean life goes on. And for me, that’s more than enough.
So today, I’ll savor it. The tests are behind me. The results are good. MS is stable. Cancer is in remission. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll let myself dream about the Bahamas again, without chemo in sight, without fear lurking in the corners. Just the wind, the water, and the quiet, beautiful word: normal. They test how a person thinks with incomplete data, how they handle being wrong, and how well they translate ideas across different worlds, technical, emotional, and imaginary. When people stop relying on rehearsed language, their true judgment becomes clear.
This list isn’t about catching anyone out. It’s about identifying those who can stay composed when circumstances change. You’ll see who thinks creatively, who freezes, who laughs, and who becomes curious. These reactions are much more useful than a list of certifications or frameworks.
1. The Talking Squirrel
Question: You’re walking down the sidewalk when a squirrel approaches and asks for directions to the nearest grocery store. How do you provide directions?
What it tests: Improvisation, empathy, and comfort with absurdity.
Great answer: Plays along with the premise, shows humor and logic (“I’d ask what it’s buying, because that decides if I send it to Whole Foods or a dumpster”).
Bad answer: Tries to rationalize the impossibility of talking squirrels or dodges with “That’s not realistic.”

2. The Alien Abduction
Question: If you were being abducted by aliens, what three things would you take with you that fit in your pockets to ensure survival?
What it tests: Resourcefulness, prioritization, and adaptability under imagined pressure.
Great answer: Mixes practicality and creativity (“A multitool, a picture of home to negotiate, and a lighter because fire’s universal”).
Bad answer: Overthinks or lists random gadgets without reasoning.
3. Cheap, Quality, or Fast
Question: Without using acronyms or buzzwords, explain why something can only be two of cheap, quality, or fast.
What it tests: Logical clarity, communication skill, and understanding of constraints.
Great answer: Explains tradeoffs with a concrete example (“If you rush, you can’t polish; if you polish, it costs more”).
Bad answer: Recites the “Iron Triangle” without fresh language or logic.
4. Quantitative Confidentiality
Question: You can measure integrity and availability quantitatively. Explain how you would quantitatively measure confidentiality.
What it tests: Conceptual depth, creative reasoning, and comfort with abstract metrics.
Great answer: Frames confidentiality as measurable through probability, breach rates, or entropy, some way to quantify uncertainty.
Bad answer: Declares it can’t be done or quotes a standard without thought.
5. The Reckless CEO
Question: The CEO insists on using public Wi-Fi for sensitive work. What do you do first, and why?
What it tests: Political skill, realism, and ethical judgment.
Great answer: Balances diplomacy and pragmatism (“I’d show them, not tell them, set up a demo that sniffs traffic on that network”).
Bad answer: “I’d disable their access.” That shows authoritarian reflex, not leadership.
6. Trust as a File System
Question: If trust were a file system, what permissions would you set and for whom?
What it tests: Systems thinking, metaphorical reasoning.
Great answer: Uses metaphor to reveal philosophy (“Root access only for verified behavior, read-only for public opinion”).
