What Has Happened?
John McDermott is a long standing UNISON activist who was an National Executive Council member in 2009. In March 2009 John lost his job, prior to that John registered with an employment agency to secure work. Under UNISON Rules a member who only intends to be out of work for a temporary period of time can be retained as a full member with full membership rights. The local UNISON Branch that John belonged too accepted John into full membership but UNISON Region intervened and classed John as an Unemployed Member despite his protests.
John appealed the decision to change his membership status and before the appeal was heard John was dumped off the NEC.
John was prevented from standing for office as a Branch Publicity Officer.
John stood for re-election to the NEC but despite receiving the greatest vote in the election and being back in employment is being prevented from taking up the seat he was elected too.
John attempted to take up the Seat he was elected to hold but was prevented from doing so and now faces being expelled from UNISON or being banned from holding office.
