A Small Step : PayBack-August 07
Wishing everyone belated Happy Independence Day!!! Proud to be an Indian 🙂
You must have never heard that a event happens first and then it gets a name <stuck>
Okay, so thats what we did yesterday, on the occasion of 60 years of freedom, we took a small step.
“In software industry, we are used to hear the word reusable stuff. Why not in real life?”
And, thats exactly what we did.
Goal: Collect all the old-reusable, not-so-bad condition clothes which are mostly redundant and distribute them among local people like coblers, fruit-sellers etc etc.
Why the name PayBack?
Its time for all of us to PayBack to Nation, be it in small steps.
Thanks a lot to Ram, Snigdha, Vinayak, Surpiy, Ayan, and Sudarshan for showing interest and willingness to make the difference.
It was great to see that young guns are interested in giving back to society in some or the other form.
We distributed the clothes in the CMH Road, Indiranagar area so if u happen to visit the place, and see a local guy wearing Arrow, Mango or Westside branded clothes, dont get shocked!!!! Instead Just say “PayBack Works”
Then the team went to blind school and distributed the ladies garments to the children there. I had to drop from there soon. So rest story may be Ram or Snigdha can narrate.
Local junta was following us for more stuff, guess last time I saw people following was only politicians 🙂

37Signals vs TechCrunch : A Ridiculous debate!!!!!
Michael Arrington of TechCrunch has gone crazy to post such an article attacking 37signals, which has led to heavy debate over web.
The debate is about should software be given free or should be charged?
Michael says it should be free and I guess he probably mis-understood, the concept of 37signals. 37Signals has a array of web based simple applications some of which are free and some of which are paid services.
Yes, you cannot charge every software product, but if some products have extra features, value and above useful stuff. Why wudnt anyone pay?
Give free version of your product, if people like it and find it useful, they would surely want to have a Paid version of the same.
I mean if you cannot ask people to “Pay-N-Search’ but it is not applicable. But, project management suites need more security, features and simplicity. So they can be charged.
What do u think? Should software be free? or charged?

BCB4: Summary of my expr!!!!
Okay, so as I promised in my previous post, I am updating my expr about Barcamp Bangalore Collectives Edition.
On saturday morning, I started bit late, so I reached the venue, IIM-Bangalore around 10:30am. I entered into Auditorium to learn that the intro section is over 🙂
Met Jayanth, Himanshu, Ashwin and other folks from Bloggers community.
Right after that in Bloggers collective I gave a small talk on “How to create a Audio/Video Podcast”. Rest for another 2 hrs I was in Bloggers Collective till lunch.
Now, the real fun begins!!!!
After lunch, I was feeling damn sleepy. So thought Auditorium would be a ideal place to sleep for a hr or so. When I went there, I find “Shourya Sarcar & Jayanth” for Unband Collective.
Shourya took a session about Basics of guitar for begineers which I found very useful. Next few hrs went so fast that I didnt realize that Day-1 of BCB4 was almost over!!!!
Then, was real unconference style. Shourya, Jayanth, Peter started jamming on some rock songs. Loved it.
Day-2 Sunday, usually its a thumb rule for unconferences that only “serious” crowd shows up. so it usually starts a bit late.
I reached by 10:30am. Then after intro session, I headed towards “BangAJAX” collective which I was leading. We were some 30-35 guys in a classroom. though we had only 3 talks but I can say we discussed on various topics some of which included intro to web 2.0/ajax, web IDE aptana, Chunk coding, Comet, Push-technology, SEO on ajax apps, security etc etc. In all it was short and sweet, more of open discussion rather than PPT stuff.
We had only three 3 talks.
1. Introduction to Web 2.0 & Ajax — I took it
2. SEO for AJAX powered sites — Allagapan(a Y!), claims to be newbie, but was not 🙂
3. Yahoo UI Library & Yahoo Maps — Shivku, a Y!, works on Yahoo Maps India.
Thanks a ton to everyone who participated in this collective.
Okay, after this session, I went straight for lunch 🙂
Oooops I forgot to tell you that Shourya dada has shown interest in teaching us guitar on first day, so I carried my guitar too.
Dada started teaching us, soon we joined Jay’s session how to make music without instruments. This guy is one crazy fellow for Rock music 🙂
After this session, the real learning part of BCB started. Shourya dada taught some basics of chords, 1-3-5 rule, and other simple YET must needed ones. I must tell you, he has lot of patience. Imgaine listening to 3 of us me, pradeep {mapunity} & yuvraj playing some really noisy stuff and he with full zest was encouraging us!!!!
Well, we did the practice till evening, before the wrapping up of BCB4. Next BCB is in November.
I did write about my learning during BCB, but I thought why not make a simple tutorial of what Shourya dada taught. So expect it soon. I am writing a complete tutorial for begineers who want to learn playing Guitar.
Here some pics I collected while we were learning.
Below Pic: Me giving intro about BangAJAX collective

Below pIc: Green Kurta techie is Shivku, He was also speaker@BangAJAX Collective towards right is Pradeep {a great enthu person}, Next Jay {rockstar}, Blue Shirt, Shourya Sarcar {our mentor}, myself in orange tee, next to me is yuvraj.

Below Pic: I guess I heard music coming out 🙂
Photos are extracted from Hari, Jace, Jay’s albums.
BCB4 is over….back to work!!!!
BCB4 is history now, but learnt a lot of stuff, NO technology but Music!!!! Yes but I have some work to finish today and will write in detail about my expr with BCB4.
BarCamp Bangalore: Collectives Edition 28th-29th July!!!!
BarCamp days are back!!!!
BarCamp Bangalore 4 , is based on Collectives this time. Collective as in a small core group of people who gather to share/learn/network with people of same interest!!!
BCB4 is on 28th & 29th July @IIM, Bangalore.
This would be my 2nd BCB unconference in Bangalore.
I am leading the “BangAJAX Collective“. But I would be hopping around other collectives as well 🙂
Some of which include Start-ups, UI Collective, Bloggers and ofcourse Hacknight 🙂
So if you happen to be present in BCB4, drop a comment we shall catch for a coffee.
Btw, that reminds of meeting Himanshu, Yousuf, Vibhash, Ashwin, Anil others for the first time during BCB3, who now are buddies.
See you there!!!!

Web Design Tip #3: Epicentric Design!!!
I admit its been sometime I have been out of blogging. Almost a week. I was out coz of some hectic deadlines, personal work and above all I didnt try anything new last week. But I am back!!!
Epicentric Design is a must to read and follow for all the web designers. It is not a new technology or something, but a simple way to make great applications.
Let me just start by giving a simple example.
Consider this blog you are reading. What do u feel is the most important feature?
Yes, you are right. The article. And then follows the sidebar features, footers and headers.
What does that mean?
It means for this particular page, the epicenter is “the article”. Just that article. Forget rest all.
Now, when you get to really start designing or building an application, consider only the epicenter. Most of the web apps I come across fail to do so, which leads in lot of messy stuff on page and creates confusion.
Rediff.com, I dont have any personal problem with them, but yes when u see the home page, what do u feel? U feel its for Logging in? or Shaadi.com Ads? or wht?
Now, simillarly consider the login page, Its functionality is to implement login system, no need for junk there. Best examples Yahoo Mail, Gmail. Their foucs is only on “Login” rest all are not focussed.
So what should be the best possible approach to build the app?
1. Sketch the raw UI, this is imp as we get an idea of what it shud look like.
2. Figure out the Epicenter for the page. Stick to it.
3. Design a simple html page before coding. It is a MUST, afterwards it may be of no use but it adds to a clear picture of what it should like and contain.
4. Code it. If u fail to do the above 3 steps, chances are you will loose an eye from epicenter.
A personal note from my side, DONT start coding first. It is a serious time waste. If u cant have a design or layout or epicenter dont proceed to coding.
Which methods do u follow to build your app? Do share with us.

PS: Yes, I guess Dhivya is right. But confusion was created coz Sanjukta’s blog says its on 7th July and the PBWiki site says 21st. What the Heck is this now? Huh?
8 Random Facts
Huh? The toughest thing to do on this planet is write about self. That really drives me nuts.
At times its good to write about urself, you will be less confused about urself 😀
Okay, so guys-n-gals read the rules first!!!
1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people and include their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
4. If you fail to do this within eight hours, you will not reach Third Series or attain your most precious goals for at least two more lifetimes.
I am not worried abt the point #4, coz I dont believe in crap but its fun, how much time it takes to write 8 points. I would write another ajax tutorial in the same time 🙂
Here are my 8 Facts/Habits:
1. I cant keep my wardrobe clean or atleast less messy 🙂
2. I am an addict to Web.
3. Daily I spend surfing atleast 15-20 new sites/blogs, most of them are related to ajax, php, mysql.
4. I hate washing clothes, which I have to do every weekend {I dont like giving them out, they kinda spoil them} 😦
5. I am committed to being a Entrepreneur, so always keep on working/reading/thinking about it {24*7}
6. I cant eat junk, attimes okay, but most of the time in hotels/offices everywhere its JUNK 😦
7. I daily pray before I go to bed
8. I am bit sentimental guy {Now, u stop laughing 🙂 }
9. I love music, specially if its heavy metal or rock!!!!!
Oooops I got Nine. Awesome!!!
So now its my turn to get “Bakras”, Himanshu, Vibhash, Anil, Mahesh, Ashwin, Yousuf, Neha, Varun Krish, Pavithra
Guys enjoy exploring yourself!!!!

Web Design Tips #2: Alternate Row Colors in Resultset!!!!
Web Design Tips #2: Alternate Row Colors
In my recent post of Web design tip, I have shown how to use Yellow Fade Technique. If you have missed it. Read it Here.
Okay, What is alternate row coloring?
Imagine you have a set of records in database, you fetched them and just “echoed” them as a bulk in form of table. How appealing right?
So we solve this problem. I know, I understand not everyone just echo’s the result directly. But then, how you show is, what your user sees!!!
Now, imagine this, we fetch the rows from database and then while placing them, we modify them in a way it looks more clear, decent and ofcourse appealing as well.
How do we do it then?
Simple. let us suppose we have got 17 rows as result of some fetch operation. Now using a while loop{for can also work}, use n/2 formula and get the even and odd results.
For every even result set we use a specific color, and for odd result set we use different color. This helps in making it in a readable and appealing form.
Wasnt it simple? Most of us, programmers make this mistake of choosing wrong colors for display { red/blue, yaak }, which is often called as Programmers Design!!!! No wonder why they call it 😀
Accept the fact that design is not programmers cup of taste!!!!
Anyways, I am working on some script for my project, so soon I will post the result and code of this as well.
If you know/happen to work, or anything related to Design techniques, pls feel free to contact me, and you can be our guest author.

Getting Real : Book from 37signals
37signls needs no introduction.
Yes, the same guys from Basecamp, Campfire, Highrise, backpack, ta-da list!!!! Never heard of these? Okay, Heard of Ruby On Rails framework? Yes, the same guys.
I must tell you, they are awesome.
“Undo your competition”. They focus a lot on design, technology and only essential features and dropping everything else.
If one wants to develop and deploy a successful web application, this book “Getting Real” is a must to read and follow.
Every aspect of project is covered, technology, hiring, users, customers.
Nothing great or something, but I would say these are essentails which we all must have come across but we fail to implement them.
Go ahead. Did I tell u that its free? Read on….

Myers Briggs Personality Type: Whts ur Type???
Heard of Myers Briggs Personality Type? If not, dont panic, even I heard and came to know about it today morning after Winslie’s mail.
I was surprised that such tests can really help you understand your self better and so does others can also.
It deals with ones psychological ability to think. Everyone has there own unique way to think and approach but when your planning for team work, everyones Personality Type comes into picture.
I also felt that, these TYPEs can also change with age, work, environment and other factors. Its about how you see things in different conditions and situtations. Though some people may resist this change.
I must admit that in India, this practice is yet to mature. Yes, some companies take Psychological tests but then it’s about the same meaning in different contexts.
My Personality type : ESTJ
You can read more about it Here. You can even take a free Personality Test.

For Open Source Lovers!!!!
I must admit, I love Open Source products and applications. I first got introduced to it during my days in Indictrans.
Since then I have always prefered Open Source!!!
Yes, now you will argue that my compaq notebook is running MSFT XP???? Now, everyone has their own stand, so my way to look at it is, something which does not cost you, can modify, distribute even build commercial apps on it.
If one loves Open Source, that does not mean you “MUST” hate MSFT products!!!!
Anyways, its a debateable topic, and we dont want to get into that.
Okay, so I write this post to introduce you, https://openproducts.blogspot.com
Yes, Its a new blog :D, dedicated to Open Source products. Most of the time, people get confused at what to use/ Is there any better alternative?
Thats not problem with users, coz everyday so many products are getting released and proposed. You cant keep track of everything. But, yes we shall try to keep in our blog.
What will this blog have?
1. Product Features
2. Applications Features
3. Plug-Ins
4. Categories
5. Scripts
And Lots more
Why the heck again Blog?? Anyhow, Web is full of Open Source.
It sure is full of open source, in this blog, I will try to organize things I come across and write about them as I use.
If you happen to work on Open Source products/plug-ins/apps drop me a line. Will put it up with full credits.

Technology Threats???
Have you even imagined that the benefits we are taking of Technology even the terrorist can take?
Imagine how dangerous it can be?
Cyber police says, it can trace the emails sent, scan them and then identify the anti-social elements.
Anti-Social #1[Place 1]: Writes the message in the email/blog and saves it without sending.
Anti-Social #2[Place 2]: Opens with same userID and Password, reads the same saved message and logs Off.
What can the police do in such a situation?
This sure may sound, simple but trust me it can prove very costly and deadly as well.
Any thoughts??? views??? suggestions???

Embedding of PDF inside HTML using frames
Some days back, I wrote a article regarding which PDF library to choose and work with, either PDFLib or FPDF. I decided to go with FPDF, since its free 😀
So now, what is the problem that almost everyone of us have faced using PDF documents?
Think again. No, not that one. Take another shot. Okay, let me tell you.
When we open up PDF file, it opens in “Full-Mode”, that means, we cannnot see the html links, page etc and it just ocupies whole web page. Now, this is a serious issue. Since, the only way is to hit the “Back” button.
What can be done to make this experience better?
Embed the PDF document inside a html frame. Consider the pdf file as a widget and we can load it inside the frames of html.
If you are wondering, if I am speaking arabic or something. Have a look at this.
https://www.jewishpress.com/TESTPDF1.CFM
But, there are serious flaws in implementing this way. Coz you cannot navigate through the pages in the PDF. I am trying to hack and fix the issues.
If you have tried anything similar to this. Please drop a comment.
