Comment on On Trying Not To Be Wrong by Nancy Lebovitz

Mon, 02 Nov 2020 10:37:17 +0000https://srconstantin.wordpress.com/?p=2676#comment-24342So here we are in 2020, and I’m seeing a lot of people (including me for quite a while) saying that the real world seems like fiction. I thought it was fun for a while, and then it got somewhat boring, but maybe there’s an actual and possibly serious problem if the real world doesn’t seem real.

So I wanted to understand how the term as we’ve been applying it differs […]

He didn’t go into detail, but here’s an article about the sort of judgement calls involved.

Comment on Asking Permission by Kenny

Wed, 21 Aug 2019 18:34:41 +0000https://srconstantin.wordpress.com/?p=9326#comment-21686This is a great post. Like a lot of your other (also great) posts, I particularly like it because it maps out a space of options and outlines significant tradeoffs among different points in that space. I think that’s a really useful perspective from which to analyze, e.g. organizations or political theories.
Something I thought of when reading about what you term ‘do-ocracy’ is the various depictions of ‘good guys’ in different ‘political’ writing – in particular I was thinking about examples from Cory Doctorow’s books. In the books of his I’ve read, he paints authoritarian and bureaucratic organizations as corrupt due to regulatory capture and the plucky do-ocracies of the good guys as plucky, ‘bottom-up’ do-gooders. Obviously there are tradeoffs – and different ones! – between those two modes, and, after reading this post, I feel like I’ve got a better understanding of why I’ve always felt like those depictions were, at best, _incomplete_ (even tho I’m very sympathetic to the author’s points).
These ideas are also really relevant to things like open source ‘communities’. Small projects should probably default to a do-ocracy, to maximize early contributions and increase the likelihood of something being developed _at all_. But, as more and more people start to use and rely upon any one project, it probably makes more and more sense to shift to more ‘asking permission’ to discourage disruptive changes.
